I bought this to get better sound from my Canon HV20. I am a professional photographer expanding into filmmaking. I am not a video pro, but the improvement in sound recording is fantastic. The mic almost totally eliminates the sound of my fingers fumbling for and using camera controls: the very slightest noise can be heard when clicking the joystick control on the camera, and this was only noticeable while monitoring sound with over-ear headphones. The Azden's low-pass filter reduces greatly background sounds that the built-in mic would pick up, such as motors, fans, etc. The camera's motor noise (my HV20 is a tape-based camcorder) is eliminated with the Azden. These successes are due in part to the shock mount and the shotgun design. However, these features are what makes it's size a bit more than I expected. Shooters who use the LCD screen when filming will not have much trouble with size. However, I use the eyepiece viewfinder on my Canon, and that is nearly totally impossible with the Azden mounted on the accessory shoe. I dug out a 1960's vintage flash bracket from my collection and modified it to elevate the Azden about 4" higher, and I am a happy camper, although I must be very careful to not bump the whole rig for fear of breaking a mount. You must have a cable to use this mic, and for my Canon the B&H rep made a good suggestion in the Hosa MIT-156 microphone cable. Luckily, it is JUST long enough to use with my extension bracket. (I plan to buy a long cable so I can put the mic on a boom pole or stand.) This is not a compact package to use for everyday shooting. The mic, cable and bracket take up a lot of space both in the camera bag and on the camera. If the shooter plans to just film casually around the house, films in rugged situations or does not anticipate needing to get the mic off-camera, I would recommend Canon's external mic, which is smaller and needs no cable. (I will consider getting one of these for situations where my Azden rig is too bulky.) The only other con I see is the power switch, which is very easy to forget to turn on or off. If monitoring through headphones, remembering to turn it on will not be an issue. Thanks to long battery life, my forgetfulness in turning it off has not yet been an issue. An auto-off feature would be nice.

After a long time reading about many shotgun mics in my budget, I decided SGM-1X was the one to get.
It's definitely well made, and comes with a nice case that holds everything nicely. But the audio quality, although good, was not what I expected. At this price range I was hoping for better audio, richer, warmer etc. Hopefully it'll be good enough for my sound guy.

We have had 9 of these mics for over 5 years and just got 3 more. The SGM-1X is a workhorse with good range for both indoor and outdoor event

Comments about Azden SGM-1X - Shotgun Mic:
I am just starting to build up my collection video equipment and this was a great cheap way to start with. I am a musician and usually have a high standard on equipment but I am tight on cash. For now this does the job, but I will be upgrading when I can. So far I have been mounting it via mic stand, not on the camera. XLR is a huge plus especially with the H4n.

Comments about Azden SGM-1X - Shotgun Mic:
It's doing exactly what the reviews suggest, providing an adequate starter mic for me in indie film.
Sometimes there's a significant amount of feedback, and even a cylindrical fur cover doesn't silence the wind interference.

Comments about Azden SGM-1X - Shotgun Mic:
Pros:
The Mic has impressive quality look.
Has low cut filter and works really well.
1 aaa battery will run forever (if you tend to forget stuffs, it's quite ok)
Sound quality is FANTASTIC. Almost comparable to the much more expensive Sennheiser I have.
Works really well with Rycote 18cm/STD SOFTIE FRONT ONLY.
Cons:
The switches are quite easy to move during transport. (duct tape will cure it)
There is no battery indicator, the good battery life make up for it.
Doesn't come with the XLR cable.
Doesn't support Phantom power.

Comments about Azden SGM-1X - Shotgun Mic:
I use this for my Canon XH A1. I didn't have a ton of money to spend on a mic but I needed something better than the on camera mic. This mic is very affordable and provides clear, quality sound that is much better than I expected for the price.

Comments about Azden SGM-1X - Shotgun Mic:
The audio comes in well and works with my DXA-2T Compact Dual XLR Adapter and HF R21 Canon Camcorder.
I like the low frequency feature to minimize air conditioning noise.
A versatile product for direct or ambient audio capture.
The only product flaw that I would say is the ON/OFF button is right where the mic holder slides. The holder sometimes slides the mic into the "ON" position, draining it of it's battery.

Did the job, but don't use with an xlr to 1/8" wire. Its gonna produce static.

Comments about Azden SGM-1X - Shotgun Mic:
I use this mic to get significantly better audio than my lower level camcorder can offer. With an XLR to 3.5mm adapter and a female mono to male stereo splitter, it works pretty well in my camera's aux mic jack. Being battery operated, it is a great tool for DSLR and small camcorder users. Quality is definitely a step up from the internal mic you will have. This is a good mic for the price. The shockmount isn't that fantastic, but at least it comes with one. It needs suspending cord that is more elasticy to absorb more interference.

Comments about Azden SGM-1X - Shotgun Mic:
I have only had the chance to minimally test this bad boy with my Canon hv40. I attached it using a simple 1/8 inch to xlr adapter. Using my nice headphones and recording in my car the mic sounds great. Sounds nice and crisp and clear. Not too bassy not to tinny. I have not had the chance to use it on an actual project yet though or outside. I'm happy with it so far.

Comments about Azden SGM-1X - Shotgun Mic:
I have two of these for making short documentaries in random places in Latin America. There is often no way to get away from the roosters, motorcycles and other background noise everywhere down here, but these microphones are good at picking up what I need. The quality could be better, but not for the price. One complaint - I am diligent about powering off the microphone, but not everyone on the crew is; a power indication light would be great.

I am using this Mic with a Canon XHA1s and a Zoom H4n, great little Mic for the money..
One thing that would be better is if the Mic Holder attached to a standard Mic Stand,,, the holes provided are much smaller.

Good, clear sound, nice and directional. Certainly a very good microphone for the price, as many others seem to have concluded as well. Included wind screen is effective. Only complaint is that the shock mount that comes with the microphone can't be adjusted to point at a different angle.
