I just bought a Manfrotto Hi hat with 100mm half ball. At first I thought I would just switch plates between the Hi Hat and monopod but that's not really quick release. I will be getting the Manfrotto CF 535 tripod with a 75mm half ball and a Manfrotto 229 3D Super-Pro Head. The 535 tripod will support a heavy load and I plan to use it for HDSLR purposes in addition to photograpy. The monopod and hi hat will also support the heavier loads.
With these 3 support systems, I figured I buy 2 more 577 QR plates and switch the 229 heads between the 3 as I need.

I use this monopod almost every time I shoot and need to be somewhat mobile. It works perfectly. I mean, it's a monopod, it's basically a stick, so it's a hard design to mess up.
There is one flaw that I noticed. The rubber shoe at the bottom pops off easily. This bugs me because sometimes I keep the monopod short and rest it on my belt or upper thigh for stability and the rubber thing comes off pretty frequently.

I use this for photo & video with a 7D. Great price and it's excellent for steadying my shot on the go. For run and gun in a tight spot this is perfect.
Only reason it's not 5 stars is that one of the extensions catches slightly when extending for some reason. So you have to pull on it for it to fully extend.

Well-designed, quality Manfrotto product. This is a good camera support option for tight places, or when you don't feel like lugging around a pro tripod. The only complaint I have is with the non-standard Q.R. plate, I need to change it out every time before I use my Panasonic HMC-150 with my Libec LS-38 tripod. Other than that, a very nice piece of gear.

This monopod is great for shooting dslr video. whether its over head shots, over the should shots, or cool vertical rise shots. I plan on using it for photography as well in low lighting situations. The only things a little weird was when you loosened the clamps the shafts seemed a little loose for my liking, but it is solid when they are clamped.

Comments about Manfrotto 558B Video Monopod with 501PL Sliding Q.R. Plate - Supports 17.6 lbs:
I entertained the thought of using a monopod for video years ago but never actually tried it. Recently I have been hearing more and more people using them and finding myself in more and more situations where I could use one. Let me just say, it is way more than I ever thought it would be!
This monopod is so quick and easy, there is no reason NOT to use it. At just over $100 bucks it's basically paid for itself as soon as you open the box. I have also mounted a fluid head to mine and find it is helpful to brace it against my belt and use as a body brace, hold it up above a crowd as an extension pole, and even create a small crane or even slide (peek) effect by just tilting it from behind an object.
I shot with this just once as of this writing and it literally never came off the camera . I WILL be buying another. Amazing, quality, versatile, incredible. BUY ONE!

I have used this support for sports photography with longer lenses. It can double as a flash support for some crime scene photography (three dimensional impressions - ie: footwear or tire impressions) where varying the angle of the off-camera flash is beneficial. This keeps the flash far enough away so that the subject is evenly exposed. Solid feel and the wide rubber foot adds stability. I have removed the quick release head as I am not using it for videoography right now.

I am a wedding videographer and the monopod is my best friend. I don't know why this monopod comes assemmbled with the release lever in a position that forces it to rub up against the bottom of your camera when you attempt to lock it, but you can and should use the Alan Wrench that comes with the mononpod to fix that in under a minute. Once that is taken care of, you have a monopod that is quiet (no rattling legs hidden in the base) and secure. I have no fear when I'm hanging my XHA-1 over the heads of dancing guests. And there is no need for me to switch plates should I choose to put my camera onto my bogan/monfrotto tripod.

A tripod is a must have piece of equipment but they can be a pain to carry to a shoot location. A monopod won't always replace a tripod but when you need stability, mobility, light weight, and ease of use, ths is the answer. It's a very good monopod and I'll always have one available.

For fast documentary-style video shooting where setting up a tripod is unrealistic, this product really comes in handy. It's lightweight and easy to set up and adjust fast. Only slight flaw is the locking fastener extends above the plate of the monopod, making it a little hairy for wide bodied cameras like the HVX. However, with a little tweaking, it is still usable and well worth it.
