Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
The "petal" shape of this lens hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area. This dedicated lens hood is designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

You can get cheaper products that are not made for Canon lens, but this hood fits perfectly and solidly.
This is not recommended but, I like that if iI am fumbling around I am able to take my lens out of the bag by the hood and not worry it will fall off.
Also the inside is non reflective.
Considering the price of the 10-22mm lens this is a cheap investment.
Pay the extra $20 and get a good hood for your quality lens.
(even though Canon should include this with their lens)

As a lens hood goes it is a bit marginal because the lenses that it applies to are very wide angle field of view lenses so the hood is limited to avoid vignetting. Still, it its limited way it does provide some physical protection to the front element and keeps some stray light out. It is more expensive than the non-Canon alternative.

Comments about Canon EW-83E Lens Hood:
This product is perfect, good quality, easy to use, helps to take good shots without the effect of unwanted light, protects the lens for accidents.
I wanted to give 4 stars, because this product belongs to a lens that's about 700$ by the time. There's a L class lens at the same price. When you buy a L class lens it comes with a lens hood. Canon's policy "No L class, no lens hood" is silly. Lens hood must come with the lenses depending on the price.
Anyway, i have a Canon Zoom Pack 1000 Holster-Style Bag. Even the hood is reverse mounted to the lens with my T2i body it doesn't fit the bag. This information may help someone.

The lens hood works just fine on the lens, it's ability to cover the lights from side of the lens works very well.

Comments about Canon EW-83E Lens Hood:
This hood is a bit pricey at [$], but it is worth it in my opinion. If you are an advanced ultra-wide user, you may not need it, but I find it comes in very handy at reducing lens flare and am glad I went ahead and bought it being new to ultra-wides. Fits my Canon 10-22mm EF-S and also gives me a bit of piece of mind in terms of the protection it provides.

Comments about Canon EW-83E Lens Hood:
The lens hood itself is solid and lined nicely with felt. However, I found it too bulky to use on my Canon 10-22, which is very flare resistant to begin with anyway. This can be used as a protection though.

Comments about Canon EW-83E Lens Hood:
I've got it mounted on a 10-22mm. It DOES provide flare reduction if used properly, but I purchased it just as much for lens protection as anything else. It does an adequate job, as long as you're not stupid with it.
It's sturdy plastic, matte black interior (of a very fine felt feel) - quality product. My only gripe is that Canon STILL doesn't include these things with their products. Can't be hard to toss in there with an $800 lens... seriously.
Also, it's huge. If you're packing compact, forget it. 4.75" at its widest point. Reversing it on the lens does nothing to help this.
Overall - Simple product, simple functions, which it performs without any problems whatsoever. Worth it.

I use this hood for Canon EF-S 10-22 f/3.5-4.5 USM. This lens is most flare resistant. So, probably don't need the hood.

As always. Canon quality is great. No need to wonder if ordering a 3rd party lens hood is equal to the Canon.

Comments about Canon EW-83E Lens Hood:
The Canon Hoods cost more but they're worth it. I had an off brand hood and it didn't lock onto the lens and would rotate sometimes, this would cause vignetting..
So, I spent the extra money this time on the OEM and am very happy.

Comments about Canon EW-83E Lens Hood:
When you can make use os this item, it really works well, but given the wide angle of the lens it is built for the window of effective performance is rather small. This in comparison with the price kind of voids the validity of the price. You pay [$] for a product that is not really that usefull, depending on your genre of photography. Buy a used one and avoid being overcharged!

Comments about Canon EW-83E Lens Hood:
This lens hood doesn't extend very far forward since it needs to leave room for the 10mm wide position, but when you have sun just out of the field of view, it does it's job nicely. It is well built and screws on to the lens like a fine piece of machinery. Note: This lens hood is much wider than the lens. If you are using a camera bag other than the Canon LP1319 (which works fine), check to see if the lens/lens-hood combination will fit.

Always buy Canon's hoods for my lenses - they do the job, worth the extra dollars to buy these.

Comments about Canon EW-83E Lens Hood:
I read reviews on other sites that the hood is not necessary, but common sense just tells me that with a very wide lens, stray light will always be a concern. I also like the extra protection that a sturdy lens hood generally provides an expensive lens.

Comments about Canon EW-83E Lens Hood:
It is a hood. Works fantastic with my 10-22mm Canon lens. I didn't buy the cheaper off brand hood because of the lining Canon adds to its hoods. I like the fuzz stuff as it does not reflect any light, as plastic (even black) will do.
It is a pedal design, for a ultra wide angle lens. So it is fairly wide.

Comments about Canon EW-83E Lens Hood:
My hood which I received April 2011 should not be sold. It's Oval not round. Off by 1/4" and allows light to enter at the lens thread.
Although there was no need to measure, because a round Hood should fit into the box irregardless how it is faced. This one fits only one way.
Since then I have been reading about using a hood on a 10-22mm lens, and the pro's say a hood a 10-22mm is waste of money, for that reason I chose not to replace it. And I don't know if I can trust Canon Hoods anymore or buy them online because returning them is costly when one has to pay coming & going shipment yet received nothing in return.
