The MT-24EX is a new ringlight flash for the EOS system that has every feature and capability imaginable. Employing Canon's E-TTL, it takes full advantage of the flash performance of the EOS-1V, EOS-3, and other E-TTL supported cameras by allowing for shutter speeds above the normal sync speed. Twin flashes fire at even power, or can be varied over a eight-stop range for dramatic directional lighting that emphasizes the relief of the subject. One or more 580EX, 550EX, 430 EX, or 420EX Speedlites can be used as wireless slave along with the MT-24EX. The controller unit has an illuminated, informative LCD panel. Accepts optional hi-capacity battery packs.

The MT-24 EX Macro Twin Lite is the cream on top of the macro photography gear. Not just because its a macro flash, but because of its superb integration into the EOS flash system. Using it stand alone enables you to do well exposed and nice lit macro shots with the same kind of operation you may know from the bigger Canon Speedlites. The two flash heads can be moved into different positions and angles and togehter with the possibility to define the flash intensity ratio between the two heads, you have almost all possibilities to control the light within the picture. Well thats alread nice , but the moment when I experienced the WOW-Effect was when I used an existing speedlite to fill the background: The MT-24EX is perfectly integrated into Canons Wireless Flash concept which means it can act like a master and remotely trigger other Speedlites (set as slave) to fire synchronous with the MT-24EX! The results are macro photos with a so well lit background that you can almost not differ from shots taken without flash and in perfect natural light. So, if you are not sure wheter to buy the MT-24EX or not but you still own a Canon Speedlite which is able to act as a slave in Canons Wireless Flash concept, you have one big argument more to do it!Even it is not cheap, it is definitely worth its price and with a nice made soft pocket for storage and transportation of the MT-24EX, Canon deliver what you expect in that range of price. The MT-24EX can be directly attached to all Canon Macro Lenses having a 58mm filter mount diameter, like the EF 100mm f/2,8 Macro lens for example. Users of other lens brands need an Adapter and, what I do not understand, even users of the Canon EF 180mm f/3,5 L Macro USM lens need to buy an adapter to connect both parts together. You buy a 1300$ macro lens from canon and you spend an addtional [$] for a macro flash from the same manufacturer but you still have to spend 30$ extra in order to make both items work togehter.

I like the build and but I have two problems. The recycle time is slow. It works like those old flashes which flash then do a long zuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuunnnnn.. and then are ready again: because it is an old flash and model has not been update by canon for years. definitely due now.
secondly even when in ettl mode when i take a shot in Av mode, it does not recognize the presence of flash and give me a shutter speed of say 20sec in a dark environment. my 580ex wont do that.
a little bulky too and also you will need accessories if you want to place the flash a little away from subject.

Comments about Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite Ringlite Flash:
I will highly recommend to the store to sell this product as a kit with adapters for different kind of macro lenses, I had no idea I needed one for the Canon 100mm macro lens until I try to use it, I had to order one and wait until arrived to use it, that was a waste of time.
This flash unit works like magic and I recommend it to anybody that wants to see their pictures so vivid in colors and details

Comments about Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite Ringlite Flash:
The flash works excellently and has a consistent interface with other Canon flashes. Works with ETTL which makes it easier. I would have preferred if it were wireless (i.e. without the coiled wires)

Using for Canon EF MP-E 65mm macro, at f/16, 1/125, ISO 100 may get the pictures icredible quality. But at 5x needed one more flash, e.g. 580EX II. I recommended using it with camera manual mode.

Comments about Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite Ringlite Flash:
I owned Canon's Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX and later replaced it with the Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite. I have taken thousands of close-up pics with both, so this review will assist those considering both these options.
These flash units are essential if you are a serious about macro photography. You will be using these units for one of the following reasons:
• As a primary light source when there is insufficient ambient light for sharp images or to obtain good depth of field.
• As a primary light source to create a 'black background' around the macro subject, a look unnatural to my eye but liked by some.
• In bright sunlight/high shadow conditions as fill-flash to create more even light and reduce contrast.
The Twin Lite MT-24EX is a better solution to the Ring Lite MR-14EX in nearly all respects, as follows:
• The dual, directed light sources create subtle shadows and a more natural and pleasing three dimensional effect. The Ring Lite MR-14EX on the other hand produces a comparatively flat looking image.
• The MT-24EX can project light some distance, well beyond the range of the MR-14EX. There will often be times, for example when after taking a close-up of the flower of some shaded forest herb one will want to shoot a little further back to frame a larger part of the plant. The MT-24EX is superbly versatile in this respect, whereas if you have the MR-14EX attached to your lens, at this stage you will often have a problem, as it may not project light far enough to obtain a well exposed image.
The MR-14EX is only slightly superior to the MT-24EX in one aspect, namely that for close up work it emits a more diffuse light which can be preferable when some subjects are comprised of pale or pastel colours (such as white or mauve flowers).
If you can afford it, the MT-24EX is to be much preferred. It does what the MR-14EX does at extreme close up, provides a more pleasing, three dimensional image, and is versatile enough to transit between close-up and greater distance photography between shots, which is a major advantage and convenience.
The MT-24EX with its E-TTL functionality produces consistently well exposed images, and the control unit interface allows for tweaking of light output if one is not quite satisfied with the result.
This product does what any macro photographer needs it to do, namely capture great close-up images. However, there are a few niggles that detract a little from an excellent product.
The control unit is somewhat somewhat bulky and dated, and in need of a refresh (as occurred when the Speedlite 580EX replaced the 550EX some years ago).
The arms that connect the main unit to the lamps can be quite floppy when one uses it on the end of the short EF-S 60 mm macro lens and these can then get in the way during close-up positioning – in this regard the Nikon solution is neater.
The attachment ring is designed for a 52 mm diameter lens whereas Canon's premium macro lens , the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM has a 67 mm diameter. One needs to buy the 67 Macrolite Adapter to ensure compatibility, which is not an optimum solution, partly because the attachment is less secure than the end of a lens.

I have a custom bracket and used 2 580EX flash heads but the 24EX makes it so much easier especially with 2x and larger magnifications. Light (relatively) great E-TTL and manual controls.

Comments about Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite Ringlite Flash:
I wish canons twin flashes were wireless like the Nikon model. The light is somewhat harsh but with the Sto-fil difussers you have many options to make the light softer. Best of all is you can get the shot no matter what the light conditions.

I use this flash to take picture of chocolate pieces and flowers, and with this flashlight everything was suddenly so easy and the pictures so much better. If you are serious into macro photography this is a must have gear. I thought I could take good macro pictures before I bought this item, but I was wrong.

This is a must for macro photos, as the regular flash does not do well. Easy to set up on camera, but does add weight. Works well on my EOS 60D with 100mm macro or 180mm macro. Do need the adapter rings to mount on these lens. A little pricey, but worth it.

Just started to use the product, but so far I am very positive. I have used it to test on macro photos of flowers. I appreciate the possibility to angle the two flashes independently and also control them independently of each other.
And so far I have not discovered any negative things, but that might come later after using it more extensively.

Macro photography has been my passion. Since I started, I struggled to get the best lighting as possible and have done many DIY props.
In the end, I decided to stop all the nonsense and get myself a Canon MT-24EX Twin lights. Then miracles started to happen.....no more bad lighting, no more excuse for a bad shot, no more dark areas, no more difficult editing....and the list goes on.
Macro maniacs.....GET THIS LIGHT!
By the way, it can be used for other applications too.

What a great Macro/Close-up flash. The flash works great lens mounted or by romoving one or both of the heads (they also have tripod mounts on them). This makes this flash so versatile. Excellent Canon quality and performance. Ettl works flawless with my EOS 7D! It is also able to control a slave and I believe it can also be used as a slave. I couldn't be happier with this flash!

Since getting the flash I have used it for macro and close-ups but it appears flexible enough for all sorts of applications. Initially, it seemed limited to macro application in which the lense would allow mounting for the Twin Lite Ring. But I soon discovered that the flash heads themselves have s "hot foot" mount and a thread for tripods,as well as the ring mount platform, making the Twin-lite very adaptable.

I have been very please with this flash. I would recommend this flash to my friends. Ease of use, flexible and gives my photos a wow to seeing details. My only disappointment is it will only work with a couple of lenses. Great product.
