Solid construction, a must for people who need to switch configurations frequently and quickly. The plate is fairly short and so not the most stable for attaching something like a slider to a tripod, but you can buy a longer plate that fits into the 577 adapter.
As for compatibility, it is NOT the same size as the 357 plate. It is the same size as many of the Manfrotto head plates, such as the 504HD. It is the same size as the Sachtler FSB-4 head plate, not sure about the bigger Sachtlers. It is not compatible with the head plate on the Vinten Vision Blue, though the 357 might be.

I bought the rapid connect adapter to attach to my Glidecam. I have more shoots that require Glidecam work, so taking off my camera every time my battery dies is a major pain. Why? Because I have to rebalance everything. I thought that buying this adapter would make changing out batteries quick and easy with no rebalancing. However, the one small problem that I've found is, the lock on the side of the adapter doesn't turn all the way around once connected to the Glidecam baseplate (in the middle of the plate). To tighten the adapter's plate, you have to pull out the lock knob and turn it back and forth in small increments until your plate is secured. It's not as "rapid" as I'd like. What makes this more difficult is using this with my T2i. The hand grip sits above the adapter's lock knob.
It's not a bad design by any means, it's just doesn't work as well as I had hoped with my Glidecam.

Comments about Manfrotto 577 Rapid Connect Adapter with Sliding Mounting Plate (501PL):
Needed a way to mount my lenses and bodies to my monopod without removing the Manfrotto video plates first. Tried to find a cheap head but nothing cheap takes video plates. This did the trick, and only [$] including an extra plate!
Comments about Manfrotto 577 Rapid Connect Adapter with Sliding Mounting Plate (501PL):
I recently purchased a third-party replica of this Manfrotto 577/501PL combo and was disappointed by the cheap construction. Even something as simple as the 1/4"-20 screw is a hassle to use on the knock-off version. The flat-head groove is milled so shallow that it's quite difficult to tighten. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra few dollars for this original. It's worth it.

The first thing I noticed when I recieved the plate is the bad wrapping. But don't judge it by the cover, when I opened it, I fount out the usual top of the line quality of manfrotto. It was sturdy and solid build. I use it to attach my dslr to my glide am and I have no worries about it popping off anytime soon. Slides in great and locks into place. The backup pin is great and keeps it from falling of as I adjust it into place. Overall great product and I would get another if I had to.

I am a wedding videographer and documentary film maker. I have many different rigs and need a consistant mount that uses the same plate on both my DSLR and video camera. This 577 Rapid connect adapter did the trick. Quick, easy release.

Comments about Manfrotto 577 Rapid Connect Adapter with Sliding Mounting Plate (501PL):
The plate works well, as most Manfrotto products do. It just seems a bit expensive for what it is. The fit and finish is good. The thumbscrew/clamp is a bit fussy though, especially when using a hdslr. You have to pull out the thumbscrew to disengage it from the bolt to reposition and then re-tighten if it doesn't clear the camera. The spring in the clutching mechanism is really tight so if the bolt is loose, it is a pain to do. Once it's on there it's solid.

Comments about Manfrotto 577 Rapid Connect Adapter with Sliding Mounting Plate (501PL):
I bought this product so that i could easily switch from my steadicam to my manfrotto monopod, but it takes a bit of awkward set up to make it right. the turning knob ends up hitting the bottom of the camera, and when it's on the steadicam, it also hits the top of steadicam base. so i had to set it up in a particular way that only gives me about 20-30 degrees of rotation to tightnen and loosen the plate.

I love this product simply because it saves me time. It uses the same tripod plate as a few of my other tripods so it's super easy. I use it on a Shoulder Rig. I think it's a must have for a Shoulder Rig. It has a ratchet style thumb screw which it nice.

Comments about Manfrotto 577 Rapid Connect Adapter with Sliding Mounting Plate (501PL):
I use this with my Blackbird stabilizer system and it works great, but buyers beware:
- The plate tightening screw may interfere with the surface where the adapter is mounted to. On my Blackbird stabilizer, the screw hits the base of the stabilizer system where it mounts, causing the plate tightening side-screw to stop turning. This is easily worked around by lifting up the side screw, repositioning it, and tightening again, but this is annoying and can be an inconvenience if speed is of the essence.
- And don't expect to lock your camera back into place and have your stabilizer be perfectly balanced again. This will never work and is not designed for it! The quick release adapter is meant to get your camera on and off quickly, not to allow for a perfectly positioned camera on your stabilizer after dismounting and remounting.

Comments about Manfrotto 577 Rapid Connect Adapter with Sliding Mounting Plate (501PL):
Not much to be said about this mount. It's a solid piece of gear. All of the working parts are metal. The shoe is compatible with most pro-sumer manfrotto tripods. If you have a shoulder rig, tripod or some other support gear it's nice to have one of these on each so you can just snap your camera on/off without changing the shoe.

Though it was a tad expensive, I love it! It makes video shoots so much quicker when switching from tripod to my Camelon Pro Shoulder Rig, I just slid and go.
