The Manfrotto 501PLONG Quick Release Video Camera Plate is a Mounting plate for 501HDV and 503HDV pro video heads. This plate is supplied with 1/4" and 3/8" mounting screws.

Very convenient replacement for the standard 501PL. Really nice to have the extra room for balancing your camera on a tripod.
It seems to be a little wider than the standard 501PL, though. It's a tighter fit into all the 577 plates I have for sure.

Keep the Video Camera steady! I have IDX big battery pack on a Sony PMW EX3. Mounted on a Manfrotto HDV 503 head. The camerea is very steady

I shoot video using the Canon 5d mostly with long lenses mounted on a Manfrotto 305 head. The long plate (mounted on the lens shoe) allows me to balance the camera and lens combinations thus reducing the amount of creep to zero after locking down. Also, I can keep the short plate mounted on the camera body, which means that I can switch to short, wide-angle lenses quickly. Perfect set up for a nature photog.
