Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Comments about Nikon HB-27 Lens Hood:
A friend recommended this hood to me as a replacement for the original HB-18 hood on my 28-105D lens. It's smaller and less obtrusive than the HB-18 plus since it's made for the 28-100G lens I've seen no problems at all with flare.

Comments about Nikon HB-27 Lens Hood:
I've been using the HB-18 hood for my 28-105mm AF-D lens, but found it way too big and cumbersome, and fortunately, the HB-27 hood also fits the lens, seems to work pretty well at shielding the lens from flare, yet is small and unobstrusive.
