I am a beginning photo student and this film has been great to learn on. Even when I don't use the correct exposure, I have been able to get something from the negative. Now that I know what I'm doing, I am going to try for a slower speed film.

Comments about Ilford HP5 Plus 135-24 Black & White Print Film (ISO-400):
Lets face it film choice is an individual thing. HP is lower priced then many (TMax) and reliable quality . Important to me, Ilford has MAINTAINED its COMMITMENT to B/W film photography. My friend who is way more knowledgable then me says to shoot @ 200 ASA ( after his study). I'm trying to shoot one type of film and master the proper exposure.

I've used this film in all formats -- 35mm to 4x5 at least -- and can say that it has GREAT exposure latitude and can survive ANY processing mistakes my intro students may make!

I use this film for my college photography class, and it works well for this purpose. It's perfect for practicing the art of pushing and pulling the film to achieve the best negative for printing. Any complaints I have are more due to the fact that I'm still learning these processes. It's great when used as suggested.

Comments about Ilford HP5 Plus 135-24 Black & White Print Film (ISO-400):
I bought this film for the first time in February to shoot a basketball game at school. I was using a Nikon EM with a 50mm ƒ/1.8 lens. There was not a lot of light in the gymnasium. I had the aperture set to 1.8. I shot many action shots with the roll. When I got the photos back, I was stunned. They were so crisp and clear, and perfectly exposed. The contrast was excellent, and the tonal range was incredible. Best part? Barely any grain! The grain is so fine and natural looking. I would recommend this film to anyone wanting a fast speed film with very fine grain, shooting in low light, or general artistic photography. All Ilford films meet and exceed my expectations.

...and "basic" is not a bad word...after trying more than a half dozen different films, I decided to spend more time photographing and less time obsessing over films...Ilford FP4 and HP5 are my only B&W's--sharp, high contrast, so easy to develop, and a nice "look"...I go with HP5 in my walkaround camera where an extra stop will capture a quick look...

I use this film with my Nikon EM, and it is great! The tonal range is superb, and there is such fine noise you can hardly notice it.
