Ilford Rapid Fixer is a non-hardening rapid fixer supplied as a liquid concentrate that should be diluted with water for use. It is easy and convenient to use in the range of 18°C (66°F) for fixing black and white film and paper in all manual and machine processing applications.

The fixing process assures that the latent image remains on the film or paper. This step is general preceded by a stop rinse and followed by a hypo wash to remove any trace of the fixer which might causing staining and degradation of the image.

At a 1+4 dilution, RC papers should be fixed for 1-2 minutes. Fiber based prints should be fixed for 1-2 minutes.

It should be noted that Ilford recommends that gloves, eye protection, apron or overall be worn when handling and mixing all chemicals.

Note! Ilford Rapid Fixer must not be used with other fixing hardeners. The fixing agent in Ilford Rapid Fixer is ammonium thiosulphate and contains no sodium thiosulphate (hypo)

Use in the temperature range of 18-40ºC (66-104ºF)
Quantity 1 liter (1 quart, approx)

I have negatives that are five years old (very young by b&w standard), but there is no spotting or color changing on the negatives. I have used this fixer exclusively on both Ilford and Kodak films.

I also use Zonal Pro archival wash and I believe the two together provide a strong fixer with minimal wash times increasing the efficiency of b&w development.

The fixer works well. solution is 1:4 and is reusable. What I didnt like about the fixer is that it is non-hardening, so it leaves the negative more scratch prone then hardening fixers like Kodak Kodafix. Second, if you live in warm temperatures, this fixer concentration once opened can go bad in as little as a few months, which was the case for me. It ruined some of my negative beyond forgiveness. Its not expensive, so try it if you want, just make sure that if you reuse your fixer solutions, then buy something called hypo check. This tests the solution to see if its exhausted from fixing one too many rolls of film. It has nothing to do with using it all the same day, its about the silver content inside the fixer solution that prevents it for working at full capacity.

Comments about Ilford Rapid Fixer (Liquid,1 Liter):

Over the last year I have been using rapid fixer for over 500 silver prints on fiber. It works great for fiber paper without harderner. I air dry the prints and "toast" them afterwards for 7 seconds on each side and the prints come out flat without any curls. Beautiful.

The mix of 1 to 9 makes it quite cheap.

I use this along with Ilford DD-X, Ifostop, and Edwal LFN to develop my 120 and 35mm film. I've used this product four times so far and I haven't had an issue and the negatives come out great. The films I've used are Ilford HP-5 and Kodak Tri-X 400.
