Digidesign iLok - USB Smart Key
Designed to address the needs of the professional audio community, the iLok USB Smart Key from Pace is a portable, convenient, hassle-free way to store software authorizations. The key is required for all optional Digidesign and Digidesign-distributed plug-ins, plus many other third-party plug-ins and software options for Pro Tools 6.1 and higher.
*Note*: The Pro Tools application and the included DigiRack plug-ins do not require an iLok.

Though I don't like being strong-armed into buying this, the iLok (both the physical product and the service) works seamlessly to register and use the various programs which require it.
One major drawback to the iLok system: "Because your software licenses are contained on your physical iLok key, the device is quite valuable, and replacing the licenses can be time-consuming and costly. Despite our best attempts, verifying the claim of a lost or stolen iLok key is not possible unless it is found and returned to PACE." yikes!

I have two Iloks and broke one of them, not taking it out before I worked on the computer. My fault in this case. Went to the Ilok website to see about replacing it. Ouch! They want $30 for "Zero Downtime" insurance - you have to send the broken Ilok back to use this "insurance," and you have to pay ANOTHER $100 expediting fee if you want to transfer the licenses to a new Ilok within two weeks of buying the "Zero Downtime" coverage. Then when you're ready to use it they whack you for ANOTHER $39.95 "replacement fee". I think their pricing schedule is strange and will consider not using Ilok-protected software.

I resisted getting an iLok until Line 6 started giving away its Pod Farm free!
Ilok installed after a few downloads, installations, and restarts, plugin installed, and I was on my way. I own PSP Nitro, had been using it native, but installed the iLok version - it runs better, with less CPU - I can't explain this.

Well I guess they need these things to counter the bad guys. Some people complain about them but I think it's a fine system. You only need one and many companies use the system.
