I have not "road tested" the base yet but it appears to do exactly what I needed it for. I purchased it because I often find myself in a situation where I can't use a full sized tripod but wanted more stability than a monopod provides. This unit gives me the flexibility to use a monopod and still get the extra stability when I need it. It's a bit more heavy than I had anticipated. The only warning I have is with the screw -- it was greasy when I pulled it out of the bag and it got all over my hands. It was only a minor annoyance but something I hope you avoid!

I bought this hoping to have a relatively small and stable platform from which to shoot low light when travelling. The problem is that these legs only really provide a stable platform for long exposure (> 1/4 sec) when the monopod is closed. With only one section extended it wasn't bad for 1/10 to 1/2 sec, but even then I had some shake if I wasn't really careful.
I put the legs on my 680B with the tilt head (3239?), and the legs almost doubled the weight. This gave me a heavier platform than I wanted, that wasn't that much more stable than the monopod alone. In the end the legs really weren't worth it, and I would have been better off spending the money on a budget lightweight tripod.
I really wanted to like these legs, but after carting the monopod with these legs inside around Disney for a week I really regretted leaving the original monopod foot at home.

Comments about Manfrotto 678 Universal Folding Base for Monopods:
Not as stable as a tripod for my camcorder or eos7d, so I might not use it for an extended interview. But most of my shooting is of events going on outside, run and gun style and this kills the shakes my monopod would have. The extra weight keeps me in shape, and it sets up quick.

It was perfect. It made a compact unit for our Maui trip. It made the 680 a lot more versatile and was really stable. Great product at a great price.

Comments about Manfrotto 678 Universal Folding Base for Monopods:
The description states that the 678 Universal Folding Base works with the "older style 3016". I have a 3016 that I bought years ago that I wanted to upgrade to a lightstand for use with a small flash. I also thought that this base would help to steady the monopod more when using a camera on it.
The unit itself seems well designed and robust. But the legs would not fit into the monopod and the metal collar it comes with wouldn't fit over the monopod leg. I fixed the collar problem with pliers (prying the collar open a bit). But the legs still didn't fit.
The problem was the groove that is near the bottom of the monopod. The rubber foot (which I removed) fits into it and prevents it from sliding off. This groove decreases the inside diameter of the tube so the 3 base legs cannot fit. I tried filing it flat, but I ended up just putting the monopod on a vise and cutting off the lower inch or so of the monopod leg with a hacksaw. After that, installation was easier, and the legs do fit into the monopod when not in use. Hooray!
So it does work, but I am slightly annoyed that the compatibility description wasn't exactly accurate and that I had to irreversibly modify my monopod.
My monopod now seems to work fine as a very light-duty lightstand, and I don't see myself removing the base from my monopod anymore so I am satisfied.

Hides away till you need it. It is not rock solid but the physics of design does not allow it. Still very handy. Well made as all Manfrotto products. Fits well! Adds weight,do the math.

Comments about Manfrotto 678 Universal Folding Base for Monopods:
I purchased this stand for Manfrotto 685B, however right of way realized that it'll not fit my model. Solution A:: was to return this baseProblem: There was no other bases and it was too late for me to return monopod. My solution B: Went to [...]. Purchased 1 inch round metal grinder and with drill sand out (took off) about 1/30 of inch from Adapter ring until I was able to fit my monopod. Labor time about 1 1/2 hrs of sanding. Obviously I took risk knowing I'll NOT be able to return this base.. So risk at your own! If you never held drill before, don't do it:)

This item is a bit heavy, but on a trip it's clearly a good choice instead of a tripod.

Surprisingly stable.
Can be used as alternative to tripod when using lighter lenses.
Guide/instructions are terrible and useless. It took me while to configure how it's supossed to work, but it is great design. Once you figure it out you'll love it for range of benefits.

The adapter collar was too tight to fit on the leg of my 679B monopod. I will return it.

Comments about Manfrotto 678 Universal Folding Base for Monopods:
This works very well. When not in use the legs screw up into the monopod. When they are retracted the same screw locks them into the down position. This provides a quite stable quasi-tripod. I wouldn't put a very long very heavy lens attached to a camera body and expect great stability in a wind, but for augmenting the monopod, the device is great.

i love the versatility of this foot.
when i dont want to lug around the tripod, i use this foot. its not completely stable for long exposure but works in a quick bind.
it is sort of bulky at the bottom and it does get considerably heavier.

Comments about Manfrotto 678 Universal Folding Base for Monopods:
I added this folding base to my trusty, old Manfrotto 479B monopod primarily to support my camcorder while shooting stills with my Canon 40D. This setup allows me a simple, hands free video recording solution with the freedom to fully use my dSLR - getting the best of both worlds for those great family events without having to juggle two devices!
