Gitzo G-1077M Magnesium Center Ballhead 0 - Supports 5.50 lb (2.49 kg)
A tiny ballhead with an exquisitely exact finish and great weight support for its size, the 1077M is both practical and superior. This head can also be used with the optional 1387 Dovetail Adapter which converts this to a quick release.

Using in conjunction with Gitzo 0531 tripod. Pair produce very lightweight setup for hiking. Ball head holds well even supporting my Sigma 150 f2.8 Macro no problems.

I bought this head to use with my Gitzo GT2540 tripod on a 9 day backpacking trip in the Sierra with my 5D and 17-40L and 25-105L lenses.
While the combination of this head and that tripod still comes to 4 lbs, it beats the pants off of the flimsy 2 lb $80 thingy I had the year before. I could get any shot I wanted on this tripod setup. The head would hold the camera and lens in even while walking with the camera and tripod sideways. I never had an issue, jumping over rocks and streams with maximum leverage in a sideways position.
I highly recommend it unless you're going to use much larger or heavier lenses.
P.S. don't forget to remove the adapter ring that comes with the GT2540 when using this tripod, otherwise you will have trouble in the portrait position with the center column all the way down. That adapter ring is for larger ball heads.

I use this head on a Gitzo basalt tripod for a very compact and light in weight system. It appears to be of very high quality and holds my DSLR (Olympus E-510) securely.
