On my h4d-40 the bokeh and sharpness are more-less indistinguishable from primes, at least for my applications and what I can see in aperture and photoshop. The advantage of a zoom is that you don't have to choose between compromising your composition or changing lenses. You can quickly move in and shoot a head and shoulders shot at 50 and then back up and shoot at 110 in just a few seconds. I choose this lens over the 35-90 because I liked the range better, and it was about $3K less. Hiking with this lens requires will, its really heavy. Shooting indoors the weight just makes the camera feel solid. One drawback is that you are told you must carry and store this lens horizontal or front side up.

Excellent build quality. You can use this as your only lens in the field, but you'll either need to be in great shape (this guy is heavy!), or have a "bearer". Note: should not rest or carry this lens "front down", ie, any backpack used should permit the lens and camera to be supported without the front of the lens bearing any weight. Uses really big 95mm filters.
