Made of silky-smooth anodized aluminum, the Wimberley P5 Universal Quick Release Plate is a simple Arca-Swiss style universal plate providing much of the quality construction, solid connection and anti-twist capacities of custom plates. It is 100% compatible with all the various Arca-type quick release adapters made by many different companies(such as Acratech, Arca-Swiss, Foba, Graf/Studioball, Gitzo, Novoflex, NPC and Wimberley).
The P-5 plate has a thin, dense layer of textured rubber upon its uppermost surface, which grips the bottom of cameras but is so dense and thin that it maintains a solid feel similar to a metal-to-camera connection. Below the rubber, the top metal surface of the P5 is machined to ensure that frictional force is concentrated on the plate's outer portions, which provides the maximum mechanical advantage to help resist twisting.
While the P5 works on nearly all camera bodies, it is brilliantly suited for use with cameras which have metal skeletons and metal tripod sockets. With plastic-bodied camera bodies, one must not apply excessive torque to the plate when attaching to the camera.

Great design. The plate is slightly concaved so it snugs up to your camera body as you tighten it. Wimberley also added some foam-like material to prevent slippage and marring of your camera body. The plate is completely free of sharp edges and locks in tight to my Really Right Stuff ballhead.
The only reason it received a 4-star is that it does require an allen wrench (which came with the plate) to install/remove. This is a drag since I also own a Manfrotto monopod which as a different style of plate. The monopod's head has a plate that easily screws on/off without the use af an allen wrench.
This plate is very sturdy. It hasn't slipped a bit.

I have tried to use this plate on my Canon EOS 5D both with and without the vertical grip and I am unable to get it tight enough to resist slipping without seriously deforming the camera/grip body. Both have magnesium alloy bodies and skeletons. The rubber that covers the plate isn't good at keeping the plate from rotating either, it's simply too hard and slippery. Overall, very unimpressed.

I use this plate on the canon 5d mark II and on a 70-200 f/2.8 II IS lens. It works as it should be. I have more than two bodies and this works out great for me.

Great for dSLR such as 5D. The gummy rubber gasket is a nice touch.

Comments about Wimberley P5 Universal Quick Release Plate:
This plate is needed to attach your camera to the Wimberley gimbal head. The plates themselves provide a solid connection that does not budge. I purchased two P-5 plates, one for each of my cameras. On one of the cameras, the plate partially covered the battery compartment, preventing it from opening. I rectified this by turning the plate perpendicular to the camera. Just took it on a two week wildlife shoot without any problems. Wimberley addresses this issue on their web site, but no fix.

The Arca-Swiss system for connecting cameras and collared lenses to your tripod is a terrific system. the P5 plate is appropriate for collared lenses such as the Canon 70-200 that I purchased along with this plate. Wimberley makes great stuff and I have Wimberley plates on essentially all my collared lenses (you need to get the appropriate size for the lens).
There are only "pros" to the use of the Arca-Swiss system and these plates - other than the expense. Wimberley makes precision double dovetail plates and as the saying goes - you get what you pay for.

A good solution for using non-dedicated QR plates on multiple gear (camera and/or lenses). Beveled base with non-slip lining holds true.
It could use something more convenient to lock down its plate screw like a coin because hex keys are easy to loose in the field but otherwise great product.

I needed another plate for my Really Right Stuff BH-40 ballhead. RRS makes custom plates that fits perfectly on all popular bodies. I have it for my 5D Mk2, but I didn't want an expensive plate for my G11 and my old 30D.
The Wimberly P5 was perfect for universal use.

I think it is a really good plate and I use it with my 645d and an Arca Swiss Monoball Z1. Easy to attach to the camera or the Monoball.
But I really don't like the price of this product. It is just a small piece of metal. So maybe 10-20 Dollars would be enough.

Comments about Wimberley P5 Universal Quick Release Plate:
This plate mounts and doesn't twist. I tried Vanguard and Manfrotto plates, but they would not hold securely when the camera with a good lens was switched to portrait mode. And since this plate also has a standard 1/4" threaded mount on the bottom, you don't have to remove it to attach without to a head without an arca-swiss quick release.

Great product. Very convenient. Very low profile. I like these b/c when I upgrade cameras I don't have to also upgrade a quick release plate. No rotation when tightened down.

the things that are great about this product include easy-to-use, strong and stable structure providing me maximum confidence when i capture my photos
but on the other side, the new invesion with the security screws that prevent the camera from sliding, isnt compatable with arca swiss

I bought this plate along with my Kirk BH-1 Ballhead. This plate mounted perfectly onto my Canon 30D. I love the integration of the safety stop screws. Very nice. I feel much happier knowing that my gear is securely mounted.
It has a permanent home on my 30D.

Comments about Wimberley P5 Universal Quick Release Plate:
Just a arca-swiss style plate for your camera. It feels solid and is very well made. The 'rubber' side of the plate really grips the camera well. Also notice that this plate is slightly longer and great for a heavy SLR setup when mounted on a tripod. I have no complaints - another great Wimberley product.
