The Terk Technologies VR-1 TV Volume Regulator delivers a consistent, quality audio level while channel surfing or changing between A/V sources, without adjusting the volume. I just bought a second Terk volume regulator, so we now we have one for each TV. And it doesn't just work during normal watching hours.My wife and I often use the TV to put us to sleep at night. But my wife constantly complained that loud commercials often waked her up in the middle of the night, and she couldn't go back to sleep. The VR-1 Volume Regulator was extremely easy to use... just ran RCA video and audio cables from the back of my cable tuner (AV outputs) to the RCA inputs on my 25" CRT tube TV. Would work just as well on a flat screen display.In my home installation, I'm using a Kramer VS-41AV switcher, so I can also attach a DVD/VCR combo, a Roku video streaming box, and the cable tuner as three seperate inputs.I read some three year old reviews of the VR-1 on the internet, that said that owners heard "popping sounds" when the compressor/limiter is working, and that it was annoying. I was delighted that this problem has gone away.Once in a while, if the source sound ramps up very quickly, there seems to be a minimal delay, and the sound is slightly garbled, but not enough to be a serious annoyance (unless you're an audiophile).Some reviews said that there is some delay in the audio (looks like "lip syncing") but with the difficulties in broadcasters delivering digitally stored video, who's to say what really is the problem. Yes, I have noticed some of this on my TV, but again, what REALLY is the problem?Performance/price... I am totally delighted. I expected $100+ for such performance. There's not much of a manual, but this device is so simple to install and use.It came with a AV cable, but I used one of my own, because I needed longer cable length to get from my cable tuner box to my Kramer AV switcher.[...]

We read the negative reviews and wondered if this product worked. Tried it since it was reasonably priced. Worked as advertised. We do not get any pops or cracks and the volume seems to stay even.
One suggestion would be to make one of these with an adjustable volume control so you could actually make the comercials volume lower than the programs.

The unit was easy to install and work great as long as the sound on the TV was selected to Standard. Sound in the compressed mode varied, but with the TV at Standard and feeding the Bose system allowed best performance. Of course to avoide closed captions during mute, we left the volume setting at minimum to avoide the display of the CC words. Nice not to hear the loud commercials booming in anymore.

It does keep the commercials loudness from running you from the room, but, isn't there always a but, it has a tendency to increase the background music to the levels of speaking sometimes. It may not be the unit, you never know how the audio is broadcast on the networks. This may just be an anomaly and overall I am pleased with the product and would recommend it.

I would rate this 99.9 out of 100. It handles all volume changes within a single TV channel great. It does seem to help when channel surfing but not perfect when flipping around channels. Once you settle on a channel, it's awesome, and a great price.
