Comments about Lowepro Super Trekker AW II Backpack:
I am an avid hiker/outdoor photographer. I often go on an all day hike and need a photobackpack that I can carry all day, protects my gear, and hauls everything I need. I own several LowePro bags and have been impressed with them. The Omni Series is amazing and the Photo Trekker is awesome. The Super Trekker is a major dissapointment. This is really a suitcase with shoulder straps rather than a backpack. This is the only LowePro bag I ever regretted buying.
I used a Photo Trekker with both 35mm and medium format equipment on very long hikes. It is comfortable, sturdy, carries well, and is airline carry-on reg. When I got a 4x5 I decided to go with a bit bigger and went with the Super trekker. Yes, it will hold the 4x5, but it carries horribly. This is nothing like a backpack. It is awkward, heavy, bulky and frankly zero fun to actually carry. I have now reconfigured my PhotoTrekker to hold the 4x5 and the Super Trekker sits in my closet.
Some major dislikes. It is too big, and I do not just mean too big for carry-on. It is seriously bulky. This is really a suitcase with shoulderstraps and not a comfortable one either. They should not call it a backpack. It has a zippered cover for the strap side for shipping it, but where the the zipper is constantly brushed while hiking and is annoying. It carries like a large cinderblock and is not even remotely comfortable. I have carried 70 pounds in my Dana Designs pack on backpacking trips and never been bothered but 35 pounds here and a two hour hike will do me in with the ST.
If you think you need this, I'd say see if a PhotoTrekker or Pro Trekker will do as they carry MUCH better. Only get a Super Trekker to use as luggage and frankly for luggage I'd get a Pelican case.
On a side note, the ST ships with the daypack which I moved to the PhotoTrekker and those two meet all my 4x5 needs for a day. But the ST is terrible
