The first thing I noticed about this tripod is how solid it is. It is made out of metal, and is rock solid. It is a little bit longer than a pencil, and probably as thick as three fingers together when folded, so it fits easily into a camera case. The ball head is the first that I have ever used, and it holds up very well. I have other large Bogen tripods with large format heads, and this mini ball head is impressive in comparison. I have no doubt that it will hold medium format gear. I was using it with my Canon 5D.
It's application (at least, the one for which I bought it) would be for a lightweight mini travel tripod where you are looking for something to hold the camera so that you can be in the shot along with your family. As long as you have a solid and relatively flat surface (floor, garbage can top, tabletop, etc.) you can use this. If you are in an area where you lack these types of surfaces, for instance, if you are hiking in heavy brush, you may want to consider the gorillapod which can clamp onto objects such as branches, etc.

I would not try a gorilapod instead of this for my camera. This tripod is realy strong and I know I can trust my camera being suported by it. The only problem is that "with great power there must also come - great weight." At least for my casual usage, I know I will plan before bring it with me anywhere. Overall, it delivers what you expect if you need your camera steady and take good pictures.

I bought this to use with my Nikon D5000 and either an 18-130mm or a 70-210mm lens. I wanted something small enough to fold up and fit into my camera bag (a small shoulder bag) but sturdy and stable as well.
The tripod is perfect, just fitting in the bag, but providing a stable and easy to adjust platform for my camera.
And all at an excellent price!

A great little tripod. Holds the 5dii and 24-105 easily, rock solid, ballhead cranks down and holds it in place pretty well. Fits in my tiny bag still, and works much better than the ultrapod it replaced (that ballhead couldn't hold the camera without slipping).
Only con is that it isn't high enough to accommodate the camera oriented to portrait. You can do it, but you'll have to close the legs a bit and have it hover there. Not terrifically stable in that orientation.

Well made, functional, careful design, a work of art. Model 709B is similar to Model 3009, but approx. 1" shorter in height and without the additional lower horizontal bezel.
Useful for not only cameras, but also antenna support and display model stands.

Very portable, good stability with a SLR (nikon D90) in orizzontal position.
When used in vertical position is quite unstable, you have to push on the leg opposite to camera.

This was bought for a trip where a full size tripod could not go. This tripod is small enough to fit in a camera bag. Being so small, it is not extremely solid. Don't expect to be pushing buttons on the camera and have it stay perfectly still, particularly with a DSLR. When setting the timer/using a remote shutter, it works great. Very well made, but the head is pretty small and is not very rigid.

Tripod with enough power to hold my pretty heavy DSLR with object. Light weight so I bring it with me all the time. Of couse you need a stable surface under the tripod, but there is always al wall, table or something else you can use. Perfect for light travelling and still bringing a tripod with you.
