There are no major concerns with the clapper board's one moving part. Ease of use is evident upon first writing on the board. My students and I have used it for several shots and things have become infinitely easier at the editing stations - students get into the habit of making their shots count, organizing their clips, and keeping equipment clean - including the board.
Very economical, and highly durable for even the toughest high school students.

I run an independent film production company, which for anyone who doesn't know, means that we're ALWAYS out of money. But there was something I just couldn't stomach about seeing my shots slated on a piece of notebook paper, so I broke down and spent the money on this slate. Most slates (as with all film equipment) are absurdly over-priced, but this one was about the right price for what you get. Granted - it's very basic: just black and white clapper sticks on a loose hinge (the top clapper has to be held up; it won't support itself). And while the front is white marker board, the back is brown pressboard, meaning you can't use the back of this slate to white balance. But overall -- especially if you're shooting digital -- these are fairly minor inconveniences. There are certain pieces of equipment that you just need to spend the money on to aid to the professionalism of your set, and this is definitely one of them.

Comments about Birns & Sawyer Economy Dry Erase Production Slate:
The product works for synching audio to video. It produces an audible clack, and dry erase markers can readily be wiped off the white surface. Overall construction is on the weak side, given the price. if the unfinished back side were painted white, it could be used in a pinch for white balance, and more importantly, would protect the clapper's rear pressboard side from water damage.

Comments about Birns & Sawyer Economy Dry Erase Production Slate:
Sure it's not digital, technological, or fancy by any means, this gets the job done. Easily the cheapest clap-board available, this product actually WORKS. It's made out of dry-erase board, so you can easily change all of the information whilst on-set. It's very simple in design, as to be expected.
On the down-side, it's a tid-bit flimsy and, if not properly cared for, the white board can get messy. Though it often feels like it's ready to fall apart in your hands, I haven't had a single problem with it at all.

It is a clapper to sync audio and video in post. The build is O.K. but I don't think it will hold up to years of use without the need for repairs, but other than that it is a straight forward purchase.

This gets the job done just fine. It is definitely an economy slate, but it does its job. If it dies, I'd buy the same one again.

Overall kind of flimsy build quality, but if price is your main concern, it does what it needs to do.

This slate is very cheaply made: the clap feels like balsa wood. It would make an ok prop, but don't expect it to hold up under daily use.
Save your money and make your own - wish I had.

This does what it claims, but it is made of very low quality products. I haven't used it on a production yet and I hope that it doesn't break before that time! The pressboard and clappers feel very weak.

Comments about Birns & Sawyer Economy Dry Erase Production Slate:
For teaching students filmmaking this works, but it won't last long with repeated student use.
Knowing how students still have a ways to grow in terms of responsibility and maturity, I'm guessing this slate will last maybe two or three years before it will need to be repaired. What part will need to be repaired? The top clapper board which snaps down on the rest. The hinge will most likely give out in a few years. If you are even a little bit handy with wood and tools you will be able to repair it.

Comments about Birns & Sawyer Economy Dry Erase Production Slate:
This may not be the most sturdy of products as it is made from pressboard, but it will definitely do the job. You can mask off the top clapper and spray paint the back white as well to cover the raw (brown) pressboard and give it a more professional look.
