Often it is necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity in one part of a scene with another. This is especially true in situations where you don't have total light control, as in bright contrasty landscapes. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky while exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark and under-exposed.
Lee Grad ND filters are part clear, part neutral density (available in grades of .3 (1 stop), .6 (2 stops), .9 (3 stops)). They allow the transition to be blended into the scene, often imperceptibly. A neutral density .6-to-clear, with a two stop differential, will generally compensate the average bright sky-to-foreground situation and is also the most popular density of the series.
Certain Lee graduated neutral density filters are available with soft or hard transitions from dark to clear. The soft edge is recommended for wide angle lenses and the hard edge is recommended for normal and longer lenses.
Lee graduated resin filters are 4 x 6" (100 x 150mm) x 2mm thick. The 6" length allows for adjustment of the filter within the holder.

Comments about LEE Filters Graduated Neutral Density Soft Filter Set:
Very well made, but hard to believe that the manufacture couldn't make a reasonable profit and offer these at less than half the price.

Used for landscape photography to hold back a bright sky. Came in a nice soft three pocket pouch. The three piece set is cheaper than buying each filter by itself. Excellent quality!

I use them for landscape shots. I tried doing it in Lightroom but it just doesn't work as well. Nice having the option of using one or a combination of them.

Landscape photo. Great for those many days of flat bright skies around here. Most of the places around here are not with a defined horyzon line, so the softness works perfect for that.

I've been waiting for these filters to come into stock for a long time. They are kinda hard to find. I haven't had much time to use them yet but from what I've seen so far there's no disappointment here. Worth the wait.

These filters help a lot in controlling the brightness and dynamic range. I use them when the dynamic range is too high between shadows and brightness

Comments about LEE Filters Graduated Neutral Density Soft Filter Set:
These are vital to anyone serious about landscape photography. Computer programs cannot bring the level of detail out of a shot better than these can preserve it. There isn't a serious photographer around who wouldn't agree its better to get it right in camera than try to fix things in software and these will allow you to do it. These filters I've found are best used in situations where there isn't a clear line that it would be easy to place a hard edge ND grad such as shooting in mountains or shooting with foreground subjects that extend from the foreground into the sky.

Comments about LEE Filters Graduated Neutral Density Soft Filter Set:
This is the first filter set of this format that I've owned. I was extremely impressed with the clarity, and functionality of this product. I had read up on ND grad filters and how much of a difference they make in dusk/dawn shots, and boy does it make a difference. I would definitely recommend this product to other photographers that shoot landscape.

Comments about LEE Filters Graduated Neutral Density Soft Filter Set:
This is an ABSOLUTE MUST for landscape photographers! I'd been introduced to ND grads through a few photography books I'd read from Lee Frost. However, their value didn't strike me until I read Galen Rowell's account of how critical they are to acheiving the appropriate dynamic range within an image of the sky/foreground. I have far more confidence in being able to correctly expose a landscape photograph accurately as my eyes would see it by reducing the dynamic range enough so that the camera's sensor can register it without washing out the sky or darkening out the foreground.
Here is why I picked the SOFT Filter KIT:
1. Soft--My horizon lines usually contain something interesting such as a tree or a building...a Hard Edge would not work well for this. A softer transition is necessary.
2. (.3,.6, and .9 kit) The sky is typically 3-4 stops (give or take a stop) brighter than the foreground. Much of the difference in brightness will depend upon where the light falls in the foreground + shadows. In order to properly expose both you may need 4 stops or more of ND gradiation. That's why the kit is better than buying seperately. You may also notice the value bonus of buying all three together rather than seperately.
Build Quality: Rather Nice. Not much to say here since I haven't dropped the filters and I hope that I don't. They'll fit loose enough in the holder so that up-down is easy while being securely in place. They aren't sharp on the edges so they're easy to hold.
Recommendation: If you're serious about landscape photography you'll have bought this kit (or one by a similar brand) yesterday!

Comments about LEE Filters Graduated Neutral Density Soft Filter Set:
I use these filters for all range of landscapes on my 18-55 mm Nikkor with Nikon D80.
I have found the graduation extremely helpful on waterscapes in balancing the light and producing more professional looking photos without the inconsistent and time consuming post production.
I wish I had purchased the hard graduation filters for use on landscapes, to accurately balance the light on the foreground and the sky with a sharp graduation.
The soft graduation gives carries throughout the frame, more so then I intended, and darkens more than half of a photo with my gear, which was not what I intended.
However, I am very glad I purchased these filters, they have yielded far superior results than my previous sunsets without filters and will be of even more aid when I have a wider angle (10-20mm) lens.

Comments about LEE Filters Graduated Neutral Density Soft Filter Set:
I am a user of both Singh-Ray and Lee filters. Lee soft ND filters are less expensive than the Singh-Ray counterparts and are a very compelling choice if cost is your major concern.
I do like the look more of the soft Singh-Ray filters, but the overall difference is negligible at best.
