The Sound Devices 442 is a professional 4 input, portable audio mixer designed for mixing audio in film, ENG / EFP, video and broadcast applications. The mixer features 4 balanced 3-pin XLR inputs capable of accepting microphone and line signal (user switchable on every input). The output stage features stereo (L/R) XLR outputs with individually switchable mic, line or -10dB output impedance.
Every input features a dedicated "Direct Output", which is used to distribute audio to external devices. +48V, +12V and +12V-T phantom power is available and is individually switchable on every channel. Each channel features peak limiter and low-cut filter dials as well as volume, gain and pan controls. Channels 1 & 2 can be linked for stereo monitoring or M-S stereo decoding. The unit is powered with 4 - AA alkaline batteries or external 5-18V DC.

Comments about Sound Devices 442 Portable 4 Channel Field Mixer:
Been a field sound mixer for 7 years, I have had the 442 for the last 4.
I have taken it on location in the yukon, the deserts of new mexico, catacombs of new york, the adirondacks and shooting on the deck of a boat in stormy waters for a week. It has never once failed me, even in Minneapolis during a blizzard where the temps fell to -10.
The sound always remains uncolored, your mics sound exacatly as they were designed to sound, even with moderate limiter compression.
I must also rave about its power comsumption. I can easily do multiple days of eng shooting with one set of procells.
I have also used the PSC mixer, I much prefer the size and design of the SD, plus the SD's metering is so much better.

Comments about Sound Devices 442 Portable 4 Channel Field Mixer:
I am not that experienced with audio things, but have been involved with audio (and video) activities where I live (which is outside of the USA). Because of power, support, and environmental issues that I face, I needed something that would be extremely reliable, not dependent on wall power, and provide for very high quality audio mixing. I ended up with 3 of the SD442 mixers, which can be daisy-chained together (thus, in my case, providing 12 input channels). In 1.5 years, I have been very pleased with the selection. Granted however that my pocket book was not pleased, but one gets what they pay for, and in my situation I got what I needed.
I do wish it had a direct RCA and phono input connectors (e.g., for keyboards and miscellaneous types of feeds), but understand the lack of space on the various panels. It is a real estate trade off. There are other ways to solve this need, but it is just more "stuff" to worry about.
I have read and understand the internal configuration procedures, but have yet to find a need to deviate from the factory defaults.
I use this/these mixers to feed a SD702T recorder, and frequently video or PA systems in parallel. It is very nice to have the secondary output connectors (which are not XLR, but you can get the connectors from SD, or make them yourself).
I have yet to have a failure of any of my SD equipment. In my opinion, SD designs, engineers and manufactures only high end, quality products.
My only real complaints are weight and cost. Everything else I could write would be positive.

Comments about Sound Devices 442 Portable 4 Channel Field Mixer:
I use the 442 for ENG sound gathering.
The ease of use and sound quality is what I like about the 442. It is in a class of it's own.
One thing that I did not care for is the difficulty in which it took to change the setting.
The menu option is a little hard to understand. Using the LCD metering to navigate.
