Designed for high-definition field production applications, the Sound Devices MP-1 is a single channel microphone preamp that delivers studio grade audio in a portable, lightweight package. The unit features a transformer balanced XLR microphone input and line level output resulting in high gain and low noise floor. A large gain adjustment dial provides up to 66dB of gain in eleven discrete steps.
A 3-position phantom power switch enables 12 Volt or 48 Volt phantom power for condenser microphones. A low-cut filter switch eliminates noise due to wind and proximity effect at 80Hz or 160Hz (user switchable). Peak limiter switch moderates signal peaks, eliminating distortion due to signal over load. The MP-1 is powered with 2 AA batteries for approximately 24 hours.

Comments about Sound Devices MP-1 - Single Channel Portable Microphone Preamplifier:
I was using this for a 60D with Magic Lantern and I had very little hiss with just the 60D but when I connected this and turned it to halfway 46db there was hiss and at full gain 66db it was unbearable. When I connected a Rode NTG-2 shotgun mic to the pre-amp the hiss was still there and just made the sound unusable for capturing transparent sounds. Noisy pre-amps but good quality and build. So I would not recommend this. The JuicedLink series are made for camcorders and only give max 16db boost which isn't enough for DSLRs unless you buy the DSLR unit. I would recommend a separate pre-amp into a field recorder. Such as the Grace Design Lunatec V3 which is transformerless and transparent sound into a Roland field recorder. More expensive but the Sound Devices pre-amps are just noisy.

Comments about Sound Devices MP-1 - Single Channel Portable Microphone Preamplifier:
Nice solid build with a good basic feature set. Optional 12v or 48v phantom power great for saving battery power when 48v not required for a microphone. The built in limiter seems right for it's intended purpose, but I didn't test it yet. Measures and sounds very good - just a little short of excellent.
Excellent value for the price.

Comments about Sound Devices MP-1 - Single Channel Portable Microphone Preamplifier:
I use the MP-1 to power my Sennheiser wireless system. For smaller projects, when I've only got 2 channels, I use it in tandem with the MM-1 on my boom operator.
It's very clean, just like you'd expect a sound Devices Pre-Amp to sound.
The only reason I rated it 4 stars, it doesn't come with a belt clip like the MM-1. So I've had to hang it from the brackets in the front of the unit. It just takes extra time.

Comments about Sound Devices MP-1 - Single Channel Portable Microphone Preamplifier:
This small and easy to mount preamp fits right on the back of a battery pack with velcro. The knobs are easier to use than those of the HD camera it is mounted on.
The quality audio and limiter gives me much more confidence than the built-in limiter and audio pre of the camera.
