The SD-800 adds a fifth AA battery to the flash. The SB-800 is designed to operate upon 6 volts of power, which is the output of 4 alkaline batteries. NiMh batteries, however, have a lower specified voltage which ideally requires 5 units to deliver ideal voltage to the SB-800.

The purpose of this holder is not to extend the capacity by 20% as stated by the website. Alkaline batteries have a nominal voltage of 1.5v per cell, since the batteries are in series in the flash, that makes the total voltage to the flash 6v w/ alkalines, which is the voltage this flash is designed to run with. Rechargeable batteries (NiMH, NICD, etc.) have a nominal voltage of 1.2v per cell, which means that you have to use 5 of them instead of 4 to get the 6 volts total that the flash wants. Using this holder increases the voltage, not the capacity. The capacity (longevity) will be a function of the cells used (i.e. 2500mah, 2000 mah, etc.)

This product is great when it stays on, it just seems to pop off all the time and this is an issue! I have another one that is the original extra battery holder and it stays on the flash a little better, so maybe it is just an issue because this is a replacement. Regardless, if you want extra battery charge this product really is worth it. Especially if you set up strobes.

I mostly shoot weddings and so a quick recycle time is critical! And this extra battery attachment gives me exactly that. I've also heard that this is one reason that the sb-800 was discontinued because the flash doesn't work to well unless you have this.

it isnt designed to increase the power delivered by the flash, it's just there to speed recycling. If you need that capability, it's indispensable. and for the price, it's cheap insurance to get "that shot".

I've had nothing but irregular failure of my SB800 flash since the day I bought it 2 years ago. Thought I would try the 5th battery holder just for kicks, cause I didn't want to pay for the SB900. Well it works great, I have a new flash for the cost of a battery holder. Yea team.......

If you have an SD-800, and use rechargeable batteries, you must use this accessory to reach the 800's full potential. It seems to extend the battery life of all batteries and also significantly decreases the recycle time.
