The SJ-1 allows for modification of the flash output to be matched to the background scene. This is especially useful for digital cameras where "white balance" can be controlled.
For instance, when shooting with a flash under fluorescent lights the foreground will be white, but the background will still have a green cast. By using a green filter the flash output gets converted to match the rest of the scene, and the camera's White Balance setting can then be set to "Fluorescent".
The blue, yellow, red and amber filters can be used for creative lighting control, and can add dramatic colors to the image, especially when more than one flash is used.
Included in the kit are 20 filters, in 8 types:
| FL-G1 (Fluorescent) | x2 |
| FL-G2 (Fluorescent) | x2 |
| TN-A1 (Tungsten) | x2 |
| TN-A2 (Tungsten) | x2 |
| Blue | x4 |
| Yellow | x2 |
| Red | x4 |
| Amber | x2 |
| Filter case | x1 |

I know, everybody says "Why pay so much when you can just get a big sheet and cut them to the right size?" Well, I decided to go ahead and get these, and I've been really pleased with that decision for two reasons:
1. They are pre-cut with a tab that slides down between the wide-angle diffuser and the lens. This makes using these gels a snap! No need to cut out little pieces or tape them on. Bing-bang, you're done. No hassle!
2. It's like a "variety pack". If you're just starting to play with gels (as I am), you might enjoy getting an assortment to different "flavors" so you can get a feel for what you might like more of in the future.
Plus, they comes in a great little case that slides right into the pocket on your Speedlight's soft case! Personally, I don't think you can go wrong ordering these, unless you know exactly what kinds of gels you want, and don't mind spending time with scissors and tape. But if you're willing to shell out a little extra cash and get a nice set all ready to go, this is for you.

I love this kit for what it includes in terms of colors and duplicate filters.
The shape is great when you use the 14mm wide angle flip-down diffuser however as a straight gel, these never seem to stay perfectly in place.
Many times I would like the daytime filters for fill flash in bright sun but generally use the flashes without diffusion or through an umbrella where I need as much direct power as possible.
I would love to see the future design include some ability to connect at top and bottom if not maybe both sides for really secure fit. I so often use a bit of tape to keep it down and use the mini rosco sample kit so this is a great improvement with diffuser but a bit of a letdown for usage without the extra tape.
Another great thing about these is that I have HEAVILY melted the plastic on three SB800 bodies and these have NEVER melted. They are TOUGH!

Comments about Nikon SJ-1 Color Filter Set:
this filter set is terrible...at the first shots the filters warp and start to melt but Nikon says in it's manual that these should be "looked at as a disposable item"surely Nikon customers would pay a few dollars more for something that was not so thin and destructible as these.

Comments about Nikon SJ-1 Color Filter Set:
This set is definitely very easy to use, and the pouch keeps the gels very compact and safe. As long as you bend in the cover as much as possible before inserting into the flash head, it will stay flush with the glass. Otherwise it will likely stick out and let some light spill.

Comments about Nikon SJ-1 Color Filter Set:
The filters are easy to use. Simply bend at the divider and they slip under the Wide-Flash Adapter and cover the face of the flash securely. The little carry case is handy as well. There are enough colors to cover the most common situations but I would like to see the addition (maybe as an optional purchase) of even more colors for specific situations.

Comments about Nikon SJ-1 Color Filter Set:
Comes with so many colors and combo's. You can even put two filters on top of each other! (e.g. blue+red=purple) It works flawlessly with my Nikon SB-600. They are thin, but durable and very easy to connect. I even sometimes hold them in front of the on camera flash. I use these wirelessly and they dont interfere with the Nikon Wireless Strobe system either. A must buy for any studio, portraiture photographer.

Comments about Nikon SJ-1 Color Filter Set:
These filters are great for color correction, but I find that the pure blue, amber, red filters to be too restrictive for effect lighting. Maybe im spoiled from having over 50 different gel colors to use on fill lights, but these are insufficient for my needs.
The ability to place the gels into the flash head is great and this alone adds value to this set. But any use other than light correction seems ambitious.

Comments about Nikon SJ-1 Color Filter Set:
Very easy to use, simply set the white balance to whatever lighting your under. Say goodbye to backrounds differing in color than the subject. I use it on my SB-600 and they're great. Could be constructed a little stronger though. Overall, they're extremely useful and easy to use.

Comments about Nikon SJ-1 Color Filter Set:
I bought the filters mainly for color balance of tungsten and fluorescent light. Both produce decent results. Other color filters are bonus for me to try other effects. Although people suggest other gel filters and custom cut for saving money, I believe the SJ-1 matches and works better for Nikon's color balance system. It comes in a small folder, makes it organized and easy to carry. The filters are very thin, so should be handle with care. I fold and insert it between the flash and wide adapter. The wide adapter keeps it in place and no adhesive tape is needed. No leaking of light 'cause it is custom made for Nikon SB-600... Little instructions for WB setting and compensation are printed on some (not all) filters that remind me. On manual, it says it's color will fade after frequent and heavy uses. I don't know how fast but for casual use like me, this is not a problem. Also thanks to a 2 filters for each color as a spare. I have the set always in my camera bag now, and I have more confident in taking better color balance pics in most enviroments.

The use is very important to correct the WB, to have only one temperature with another fonts. Really organizated in one folder small, but the filter could be less slim

Comments about Nikon SJ-1 Color Filter Set:
I've been fiddling around a lot lately with Picture Control and White Balance on my Nikon D700. On Ken Rockwell's website I read about using gel filters, and I dug out the few gel filters that came with my SB-800 several years ago, and started enjoying them so much that I wanted to play around with more colors. So I ordered the SJ-1 set and was pleased to see that several of each color are provided, and they all have some small and helpful printed instructions on them for how to set your flash and White Balance. I am now leaving one of the orange filters on the SB 800 almost all the time, since I am often photographing in low ambient light. Provides a nice rich glow to the images. Try them--a gel filter can make your images really pop.

This product fits easily onto my SB600. Just fold the filter, as directed, and slide it into the wide angle difussion lens slot. You get a good seal between the filter and the flash...it also comes with a good selection of color filters.

Comments about Nikon SJ-1 Color Filter Set:
I am glad I made this purchase. I have done some shots in side under fluorescent without and with the one of the green gels and it does make a difference. This was the missing element in my inside pictures. The gels fit easily in and stay put. I also like the the case it comes with. I know some will say it is a bit pricey but I feel it is worth it as it fits well and seem durable.

Comments about Nikon SJ-1 Color Filter Set:
Great idea and useful but very flimsy. The good thing is there is two of each filter so you have a backup (or for two flashes at once). It's cheap enough so if you need to buy another pack you can without breaking the bank. You will need to attach part of the filter with a little tab of tape to keep it down over the flash. I hear they can warp when overheated but I haven't had that happen yet.

Comments about Nikon SJ-1 Color Filter Set:
The set comes with a variety of colors each with more than one filter. The gels are flimsy feeling so I do suggest tape to secure them with, but despite the flimsy feeling they do their job well. When using full output on your flash they may wrinkle from the heat, but this won't effect performance. This set also comes with a handy holder. All in all these are a must-have.

The selection offered is great and does its job-adjusting the color temperature of your flash. It's nice that they are precut. However you may need to use clear or gaffing tape to secure the bottom of the gel to the head. The blue and red filters are fun to use too. Gels are a must!

Comments about Nikon SJ-1 Color Filter Set:
In addition to providing spares for the tungsten and florescent gels that come with the Nikon Speedlights, this kit also provides red, blue and yellow gels that work great to modify the muslin backgrounds I use in the studio, where my subject is primarily lit via stobes in softboxes or behind umbrellas.
The gels tend to wrinkle, especially when the Speedlights are putting out full power, but can still be used with no noticable negative effects. When they do wear out, you have a total of four of each color provided in the kit, so you do have backup.
