The AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED is another high-quality zoom lens option customized for digital cameras, part of the new DX Nikkor series. Designed specifically for use with Nikon digital SLR cameras with the smaller DX size chip, it features wideangle zoom capability, ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass and Nikon's exclusive built-in SWM (Silent Wave Motor).

The lens is targeted at professional and advanced amateur Nikon D-SLR users who demand both the advantages of high optical performance and wideangle focal zoom range.

This G-type Nikkor lens is designed with no aperture rings, and offers easier, virtually mistake-free operation because the aperture does not need to be set to minimum. Equivalent focal length in 35mm is 25.5-85.5mm.

Note: AF-S feature is not supported by certain camera models. Please see here for a list of compatible models.

Note! DX lenses are NOT recommended for use with 35mm, digital "full-frame" FX, or APS SLR cameras

Fast, ultra-wideangle zoom lens with Silent Wave Motor
Three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements minimize chromatic aberration, provide higher resolution and superior contrast
Three aspherical lens elements minimize distortion, especially at the periphery, for superior optical performance
"SWM" (Silent Wave Motor) for swift autofocusing with superior accuracy and ultra-quiet operation
The rounded diaphragm opening (7 blades) makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural
M/A mode allows rapid switching between autofocus and manual even during AF servo operation, with virtually no time lag
Internal Focusing (IF) design for smoother focusing and great body balance

I purchased this lens along with the excellent 70-200 f2.8 VR for my D300 body. I prefer to use a flash as little as possible so the faster f2.8 lenses are a must for me. While there are other Nikon lenses in this zoom range for considerably less money, this one fits the needs of photographers requiring outstanding optics and the speed of a fixed aperture f2.8 lens. (Most kit lenses are variable aperture, meaning the aperture gets smaller as you zoom in.)This lens is professional grade - built like a tank and relatively heavy. It is much larger than similar kit lenses and it weighs considerably more. The added weight actually provides a nice balance for the D300 with MB-D10 attached. The autofocus is very fast and precise and the images it produces are tack sharp. I use it as my everyday general purpose lens with outstanding results. As others have stated, more expensive equipment doesn't necessarily mean you'll get better photos. The premium price reflects features and build quality. A $200 kit lens may very well provide comparable image quality at your backyard barbeque. But for those who need and will take advantage of the wider aperture in low light settings, this lens has few equals among standard zooms.Bottom line: If you plan to take advantage of the wide aperture, this lens is an uncompromising must-have. It is an outstanding lens for those who need its capabilities. However, if most of your shots are outdoors in daylight, or you're used to using a flash inside, this lens might be more than you need. Save your money and get the excellent all purpose AF-S DX VR Zoom-NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED or the less expensive AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR.Note that this is a DX lens and is intended to be used specifically on the smaller DX sensor cameras (everything from D40 to D300). Anyone with a D700 or other full frame (FX) sensor should look at the AF-S NIKKOR 24-70 f/2.8G ED. Of course anyone with an FX camera should already know that. But anyone considering upgrading to an FX camera in the near future might want to rethink purchasing this [$] lens.

This lens has excellent build quality and the expected weight of a pro level lens. I shoot mostly wedding and family portraiture and this lens does not deliver the sharpness I want. I also own the Nikkor 70-200 2.8 VR lens and it delivers outstanding picture quality. I expected the same from this pro level lens. I tried several different lighting situations and F-Stop ranges on my D300. It just doesn't deliver the quality I want for my images. My copy also tends to backfocus. Everyone seems to really love this lens so I may send it back to Nikon for recalibration and see if that helps. Hopefully, my copy of this lens just needs to be tweaked.

      Comments about Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Lens:

From the moment I unboxed this thing of beauty I was in love. I bought it so that I could have the quality I get from my 50 and 35mm primes but with the versatility of a zoom. This met the challenge quite easily. I wish I'd purchased this a few years ago when I bought the 14mm wide angle (which I've now sold to get this one, hehe). It has already replaced my 18-200 kit lens as my everyday lens. It's super fast and the images are amazing. I've used it in the studio quite a bit as well as out and about to include a recent trip to and old abandoned sanitarium in Beelitz, Germany.

Absolutely a fantastic lens. Have been using the kit lens and Tamron, but this lens totally beats them out. Extremely sharp even though it does not come with the VR. I have both the D90 and D7000. This lens does not come off my D7000 since it serves all my needs. Although a bit short in distance have not needed.

                    Comments about Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Lens:

I use this for weddings. I actually traded in my D700 and stepped down to a D7000. I was using my 24-70mm f2.8 lens on my D7000, and it just wasn't wide enough at the wide end. So I bought this 17-55mm f2.8 lens with some reservation about its quality compared to the 24-70mm. I'm not disappointed at all! The pictures are sharp and the colors are great. I only have one small complaint and that is the focus ring. It is very narrow and at the very back of the lens adjacent to the camera body. When you are zooming in and out, you sometimes hit your other hand because the zoom ring is so close to the back. Otherwise, this lens rocks!

I use this as my main lens on my D7000. The wideangle is adequate for most situations and the telephoto reach is okay. It would have been nice if it reached a little further. Autofocus is fast and the lens handles easily.

                                Comments about Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Lens:

This is one of the sharper lenses that I've ever owned. The focus is quick and very quiet (no annoying focus motor sounds). I bought it and shot the majority of a wedding with it a week later and was pleasantly surprised by how sharp the images came out. The colors straight out of camera were also amazing.
It is a heavier lens and is much beefier than it's sigma equal.
Overall I would recommend this lens to any serious photographer.

                                Comments about Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Lens:

I have been extremely pleased with this lens. I struggled with the decision to purchase this instead of an FX format lens. In the end, cost and a realistic expectation that Nikon will not have a prosumer FX body in the near future that is affordable (i.e. <$1500) led me to pull the trigger.

                                Positives:
Lens quality is great - equal build quality to any other pro level Nikon lenses
f/2.8 is so liberating after using the 18-200mm lens for several years.

                                Negatives:
No VR - for a mostly wide angle lens, this isn't a killer but it'd be a nice addition.
Heavy - as befits the build quality it is not light. On your shoulder or in your bag this is a negative but the weight feels great when shooting and I feel that it both gives more substance to hold and makes my shots less shakey due to the extra mass.

All in all, I am very glad I made the decision I did.

I use this 17-55 as my primary lens. I gave it 4 starts instead of 5 because of the weight and the easily crack lens hood. Other than that, it is a great lens.

I Love the silent wave motor focus system
This lens is even beter than I expected after reading the negative reviews.
Mounted on my D90, it is heavy, but I knew it would be.
I'm impressed with the performance in low light conditions.

                                Comments about Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Lens:

I use a D300s now (got it last year) after using a D100 for 8 years. I had not gotten a zoom lens of this quality until now. If I wanted to shoot with a higher lens, I would put my 50mm 1.4 on but hated how far away I had to be.

then I got this lens. WOW! Focus' fast, shoots great even in low light and amazingly smooth motion when running in full manual. This lens has become my every day lens. Highly recommend this lens.

Recently I shot fireworks with this lens and they turned out very nice, and the video turned out nice as well.

WOW! I didn't realize how sharp the images would be after I first experienced this lens on my Nikon D300s. It is truely a great lens and going from the Nikkor 18-200mm lens to this was night/day. The clarity is amazing and the f/2.8 is very good for events and weddings. You will truely enjoy this lens as I am and it stays on my camera at all times now. I just need to aquire the 70-200 f/2.8 and I will have everything I need.

                                    Comments about Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Lens:

Has become my workhorse lense with clear crisp detail. At little heavy, but I've gotten used to it.
