The Kensington Expert Pro (Mouse) Trackball (model #K64325) is well designed, well made and offers the features needed for a high productivity workstation system. The sensitivity to trackball motion is at a level well suited to general workstation pointing needs. The ball glides easily in its socket and can be tipped out for cleaning out the inevitable dust accumulation. The four buttons provide more that what is needed for the expected multi-button Unix/Linux "mouse" device, and the convenient scroll ring around the ball is a significant boon. The USB interface to the host system is supplemented by a PS2 adapter for older systems (I find it very helpful to have the same pointing device on both my "legacy" server/firewall system and my primary production workstation). The provision of an optional wrist rest that attaches to the base unit will almost likely be an ergonomic necessity for people who spend a long time at their system doing production work (such as the software development that I do).
Though the construction is quite solid for even professional workstation use, it is not up to industrial levels of robustness. The shape of the base unit - a slightly convex top and buttons on a casing angled towards the user - while adequate could have been designed with a much more hand-cupping shape and the buttons placed where the fingers naturally fall to significantly improve its ergonomics; the button placement at the four corners of the ball platform requires more finger and wrist motion than is desired, though the buttons are helpfully quite large. Slight inconsistency in manufacturing precision also show where this matters in the ball glide: In the two units that I have in one the ball glides very freely while in the other it moves easily but can not be "spun" freely for fast zipping across a large, multi-screen display.
Since manufacturers have apparently abandoned new development of trackball designs their seems to be no more effort to build the "perfect" trackball that fits naturally in the hand in its "at rest" position with the ball and actuation buttons placed in "effortless" positions. After an exhaustive search of all available trackballs, both consumer and industrial, I concluded that the Kensington Expert Pro Trackball is the best available for professional workstation use.

Works well, took a while to break in the trackball. I propped the wrist rest on a thin book to get a good angle. Works well in CAD. The scroll ring is cheap feeling, but works well (this was no surprise from other reviews). The software (trackball works) is OK, but does not have alot of programmability. Accelleration does not include detailed control. The software worked fine on one windows 7 64 bit machine, but on a windows 7 64 bit laptop it crashes on startup despite several reinstalls. I have not tried Kensington support, since I read so many comments that it is pointless to try--maybe one day when I have some time....
Comparing to a CST laser trackball this is not as well made, and the trackball itself doesnt feel as nice, but is much cheaper to buy. Certainly way nicer to use than, say a Logitech laser trackball. I would recommend it with the caution about the software.

Comments about Kensington 4-Button USB Expert Pro Mouse - Trackball:
No more pain using the Kensington Expert trackball. Before using this I had RSI when using a regular mouse and then horrible pain in the base of my thumb when using an ordinary thumb trackball. Now I mostly use the palm of my hand or multiple fingers to move the cursor. Beyond the right & left clicks, I use the other buttons (or combination of buttons) for double click, drag, copy and paste. There are a lot more choices. The only problem is the scroll ring sometimes goes more than a page even with a small movement. I had one of these years ago and the ball was lighter. I actually like this heavier ball. It feels more secure and smooth.

Comments about Kensington 4-Button USB Expert Pro Mouse - Trackball:
Just bought this mouse for audio editing. I upgraded from the smaller two button mouse. I have used it for a few days and I'm still trying to decide if I like it. I really love the extra buttons and scroll wheel. I'm unsure about the ergonomics. I have discomfort with any mouse, but I was hoping that the wrist pad would help. It has helped with some discomfort, but possibly cause others.

Comments about Kensington 4-Button USB Expert Pro Mouse - Trackball:
The equipment itself is great for folks with disabilities that have trouble with holding a mouse still and/or double clicking, any type of precision issues with the hands. Unfortunately, we have Windows 7 64 bit and the software does not work. After MUCH struggling with internet solutions and no help from tech support (they said they'd call back, still waiting), we figured out that the only way to use it is to disable driver signature verification every time the computer is booted, and even then the four button settings don't work. So disappointing!

I am using the Kengsinton Expert Mouse every day. I am a contractor developing training materials in Powerpoint, and the trackball makes the movement of my cursor across my two monitors 'wicked fast!'. Plus, I used the free software to program two of the 4 buttons to open my photo-editing application and my web-browser. Now I can search for an image and edit it with just a few button clicks. It really has saved me a lot of time in the short period I've owned it!

I use the mouse on a cramped set-up between monitor, scanner, printer and keyboard. It's a little large but the wrist rest is a big help. Picture editing and drafting used to require more space and arm motion. Good resolution per movment but a little too fast for me.

In fact I have purchased this product "again and again... ". It's fast, efficient, small foot-print, and easy to work with. I am a graphic designer and have used the Trackball since its inception.
The only CON, is aesthetic... that you can no longer substitute the "ball" with a billiard '8-ball'?

I use his product for video production. Had problems with my hands killing me with other trackballs. After buying several types of trackballs I finally found this Kensington model that lets me work pain free. Great product

I am a current Sound Design Student at Vancouver Film school. I decided to purchase this product because not only do all of my instuctors use this, but the mixlabs we have all have this mouse in the systems. I was very happy to have purchased this eventhough it is almost $80 for a mouse I do feel this was totally worth it. I am currently using this for sound editing in Protools and this is great for scrubing in regeions and I can also program each button to whatever editing tool I like. It also came with a hand rest which was a plus because I did not expect this. The Cons are that I know that the ball is supposed to be detached but it would be very nice to be able to lock it if I had to carry it. The scroll ring is not that smooth like I expected it to be but in general I am quite happy with this product.
But please remember it does take some time to get used to this mouse.

I've been using a trackball forever - always a Kensington. This current model is accurate, comfortable and convenient. Perfect for tight desk space or for use in non-standard environments, like on a music keyboard or audio console.

I used one at work and had to get one for home. It is easy to operate, trackball is very responsive and smooth. Ring around the trackball that lets you scroll up and down works great (feels cheap but works great)... I set it for small increments and it makes for a very smooth scroll. This trackball keeps you from gripping something too small for your hand... helps you be safer ergonomically. Try it, you'll love it. I use this instead of many types of mice and instead of the track pad built into my laptop.

I'm across the border in Toronto, Canada and I use a trackball almost exclusively. With my current model starting to drag a bit - which means jerky motion and no good for graphics - I did my research and found B&H with a very good price.I ordered the Kensington Expert Pro Trackball, [...]Well done, B&H, you are a winner, you have my attention, and you are on my A-list. I would definitely order from you again - after doing my (mandatory) price research, of course!!Please keep your prices low and service high they way they are now, and you can't go wrong.Thank you for your excellence... which is something that I seriously appreciate.

That trackball is great! Fully customizable so I can put my keyboard shortcuts right on the trackball. Plus its great when working with 2 screens cause you can go from one end of the screen to the other with just a flick of the fingers, no wrist movement. That makes it real easy on the tendons.
I'd recomend it the anyone working long hour on the computer.
I learned a little trick to get even more spin out of the ball: rub a little pledge on it.

It is better than the track ball that only caters to your thumb. All fingers get involved to take the pressure off your thumb. You can press a keyboard button which will slow down the pointer movement if you need to be more accurate - Big plus. I love it & I'm getting another one for work. It's worth every penny if you are on the computer a lot.

Comments about Kensington 4-Button USB Expert Pro Mouse - Trackball:
This product -- especially when combined with a split ergonomic keyboard -- helps to reduce stress on your wrists. Clutching the mouse puts a lot of stress on the muscles in your forearm. But you roll this big trackball with your open hand. Instead of clutching the mouse button, you can simply tap one of the big programmable buttons with your thumb, and the mouse locks and drags until you tap the button again, when it releases. The scroll wheel is terrific. It seems like an afterthought but I use it all the time. I like this product so much, I bought one for my business partner for Christmas.
Just like the split keyboard, people who sit down at my computer and use the trackball for the first time hate it. But if they use it for more than one full day, they end up loving it.

It's a nice trackball, BUT...
I have a 12-year-old Expert mouse that finally gave it last. I loved it, especially the feature that let me pop up a keystroke menu.
New one is similar, with a scroll ring added, but my beloved keystroke menu is no longer in the software. Without that, it isn't worth the price.
