I bought the ADVC-55 to digitize old family VHS and SVHS tapes. To date I've only used the Canopus to import segments from 2 hr tapes to iMovie for editing. I have no experience with importing to burn to DVD or other device. It is simple to set up - just plug the audio and video output cables to the Canopus and the Firewire 400 to my Mac Pro. Warning: My iMovie 08 would "hang" if opened after the Canopus was connected. Open iMovie 1st. The imported images appear to display overscan because both vertical sides show a thin area of faded image, and the bottom edge has a thin skewing defect as noted by another reviewer. I believe the problem is overscan because adjusting the tracking on the source unit had no affect on the skewing. I easily eliminated both the vertical side and bottom defects by using iMovie's crop tool. The instruction manual states that some users consider the audio input level too low so a switch is provided to increase the level by 15db. I needed the additional 15db. Monitoring the video on the computer screen while cueing the tape or importing is for video only - not audio. I worried thru my 1st project wondering if I would end up with a silent movie...I didn't but I did have to amplify the sound in iMovie. The audio sync is good unlike the result I got previously with a cheaper consumer product. If I knew then what I know now, would I still buy it? Yes!

Reliable, yes. But it does seem to decrease the video levels by about 20 points or so on the vectorscope. Not sure why this is. Not getting enough power? I boosted the levels on my switcher to compensate but that can only go so far. It seems to cap out at about 80 (where 100 equals pure white) so that things are just a bit darker than they should be.

Comments about Grass Valley ADVC55 Compact Analog / Digital Converter:
The ADVC-55 is very easy to use - simply plug your male RCAs into it, and then the firewire out. There are no extra steps to take (i.e. charging the unit, etc) in order to get the ADVC-55 to work.
I stream my son's hockey games by connecting my camcorder via the ADVC-55 to my Macbook Pro. When I tried to use ustream.tv with Safari as my browser, Ustream did not recognize the ADVC-55 and reverted back to the built-in mic/camera. When I changed the browser to Google Chrome, Ustream recognized the ADVC-55 and my camcorder.
I would recommend the ADVC-55 as a conduit for anyone who wants to stream.

We have been using this in our elementary school studio for about 5 years on a daily basis.
We have inputs from the sound board and video mixer so students can record the daily news show and various projects directly into a computer.
It is set up and used by 3rd-5th graders. It always works, period.
I cannot speak to any quality issues as we capture at fairly low bit rates.

We are using this product to get the video out from a Tandberg video conference device into our computer for online webinar broadcasts. After trying several other solutions, this one works perfectly!

This little converter box is a must have if your VHS videos are still in good shape. If your videos are not in good shape it will drop frames and will freeze up on you. It will as also create popping noices if video skips frames or if audio is bad.

I use this to convert analog camcorders into a format that I can import live into iMovie on my mac. This does a great job.

Initially I plugged the device into my Macbook Pro (using a FW800-400 converter plug) and it wasn't recognized. After a little searching, I found an article that suggested resetting the FW port (by zapping the PRAM) then restarted and it was perfect.
I loaded a video from my old Sony TRV-120 camcorder using the S-Video and headphone out from the camera to the ADVC55 and it worked perfectly importing with iMovie.
Remember that the quality will only be as good as your source.

Comments about Grass Valley ADVC55 Compact Analog / Digital Converter:
This was given to me by my parents in return for converting about 30 tapes to digital. I mainly am using it to convert home videos from Hi-8 and Digital-8 to .MOV files. I have also found this useful with a laptop recording media directly to a computer hard drive, especially for timelapse because there is no worry about filling up memory cards and tapes. The quality is amazing, I am just using iMovie '11 for capture the editing on my other computer with Final Cut and the color quality of the device is simply amazing. I have had bad experience using cheaper converters that desaturate and change the hue of video. This does not add any sort of artifacts and unwanted color to the footage. Highly recommended for anything from capturing family memories on tape to professional SD video capture.

Comments about Grass Valley ADVC55 Compact Analog / Digital Converter:
The ADVC55 has worked perfectly out of the box for me as I have uploaded 30 hours of Hi8 video from an old Sony Handycam into iMovie with no problem. I wish I would have known that it does not convert analog audio from cassettes like other Grass Valley converters do but if you want only video conversion this is the perfect easy to use little box.

Comments about Grass Valley ADVC55 Compact Analog / Digital Converter:
I've used this product to convert many hours of analog 8mm camcorder video using iMovie '09 and so far the result have been great. Setup is simple - just plug it in and it works. It's very convenient that the unit is powered from the Firewire cable, although users with 4 pin firewire connectors will need to purchase a separate power supply.

Comments about Grass Valley ADVC55 Compact Analog / Digital Converter:
My daughter wanted to webcast a Wii gaming session on Ustream via our MacBook Pro. We tried four other devices, including the GrassValley ADVC mini, but none were able to act as a live feed. After a quick email exchange with Grass Valley, we determined that the ADVC55 would do the trick – and it did. Setup took seconds (just plugged in the AV cables and connected the firewire to the MacBook.) No drivers or other setup necessary, it works right out of the box. iChat, iMovie, Photobooth, Ustream Producer all saw it and could use it as a live feed. Video quality was excellent, audio quality was excellent. It's small and easily portable.

I needed a solution for my 8 and Hi8 analog videos to convert to digital format. It also solves my VHS home movie issues as well. I am so happy to NOT have to send them out and possibly lose them. I use a Mac and was able to use iMovie and get them organized. Thank you!

This is the second one of these converters I have purchased to use with a digital script supervising software for film shoots (an associate and I both use the program and therefore needed two of them). It worked great from the moment I plugged it in. The only thing that sometimes happens is that my program doesn't recognize it the default video signal every time (instead tries to use the computer's internal video camera)... when that happens, I need to restart the program or computer with the unit already plugged in.

We are using this product for encoding our signal so we can stream it online. The device is excellent. We additionally bought the power supply also since one of the computer doesn't have the appropriate Firewire card.
