Comments about Lowel Big Boom Kit:
I like the tripod with a wide base. Everything about this was nice at first look. The issues came when I tried to use it. I have a monolight that is 7lbs. I was using a softbox with it as a hair light. All of this couldn't be more than 10lbs. The system is rated for 15lbs, so I figured I was in the clear. Wrong. I had both weights on the end, I had placed the arm so it was just about in the center and I had to use a sandbag on it to balance the thing out a bit. The arm bowes a lot with the weight, so I was thinking more of a safety issue. I could deal with all of this though, but the issue is the pivot head on the tripod that is made of cast aluminum. It has a long rod with a pin on the end so it's easier to turn, but the thing stripped out on me the second time I tried to lock it in place. I didn't crank on it hard, but it kind of just gave way. If you are using this for something like a speedlight and an umbrella setup, it would work well. I worry about putting the 10lbs back on it. I'm left with trying to get the pivot joint replaced now and hopefully Lowel will stand by their product.
