Rugged, inexpensive and simple. We've been using Lowel D and DP lights for decades. Ad ann umbrella or a softbox and you have a lovely key light. Pop in a diachroic and you've got instant daylight fill. Compact design, focusing capability, lightweight, built like a tank, and it's easy to repair. It's a great must-have light in your kit. And you can lamp it from 500-1000W. It's a great team player.

I have three of these lights that i have used for small video shoots. they are light and easy to setup but the connection between the globe and the fixture is not good. the light will often go out when adjusting spot/flood or just when the stand is bumped. if you have time to stop shooting and attempt to reseat the globe you can often get them back up and running but for a live event where there's no going back i would not recommend this light.

This is my 3rd, they offer great bang for your buck if you don't need the extra focusing power/precision of a fresnel lens in front of your light. I find the zoom fuction & barn doors adequate for tons of situations (ie bounce off ceiling).

Comments about Lowel DP Focus Flood Light (120-240VAC):

This is a good main light at a reasonable price. They do not hold up with frequent use. I have a bunch of old broken ones around the studio which are now useless. The power cord seems designed to pull out from the receptacle that connects it to the main body of the lamp. These last even less time than the lights. A redesign by Lowel to correct these problems is suggested.

We've used these lights for video production and stills for years at our studio, and they've performed admirably. I was happy to see the newest model of this light has an improved switch, which was a weak point for the older ones (and one reason they had to be replaced). The light does give off some heat, but it's dependable, and we plan to keep using them into the future.

I have one of these babies in my kit. Add a dimmer and it works magic. Add a snoot ( the narrow version) and it is awesome. Add a daylight balanced glass filter and you have an HMI without spending thousands of dollars. Rugged and reliable with a great cool grip handle this is the light to buy if you can't afford an Arri. No regrets.
