Pro:
* Range is amazing. No need to change lens / switch camera; you'll always get the shot ( yes, that split second :)
* Image quality is very good throughout the range(as expected being an "L" - and given the price).
* Image stabilsation (IS) works great for non action shots and action shot if you can pan. Does not compensate for the small aperture though.
* As any USM lenses I used, very quite focus.

Cons:
* Slow lens (3.5 is at 28mm, it climbs to 5.6 fairly fast in the zoom range).
* Big and somewhat heavy (I usually carry it between 4 and 10 hours; the height become noticable at the end but I don't mind much)
* You will draw attention.

Other :
* Push/pull design (not a pro nor con, just need to get used to).
* The locking ring is your friend (esp. when moving around in a crowded room).
* Focus seems to hunt a bit at long telephoto and low light but can be imprroved by switching the focusing distance to "2.5minfinity".
* Ah... if only this could come in a fixed 2.8.
I would bet most people looking into buying this lense would put the extra cash to get the speed.

Comments about Canon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM Autofocus Lens:

Purchased this lens for an extra lens for wildlife photography as one never knows how close or far they might be. It was used on my second camera while I had 100-400 on the other camera. I also wanted a lens for both people and landscape!
This is a superb lens and one only needs the 28-300 if travelling throughout cities, rural areas so you are ever ready for people or landscape. This is a Must Have lens for Canon shooters!

If you ever want to own only one lens - this is it. This is my second lens (gave away my older one) and although one needs to do some heavy weightlifting - it is worth the effort. Great quality at all focal lengths (a little soft on 300 mm), sturdy and multipurpose this lens is built for every environment, including some harsh dusty safari conditions.

Comments about Canon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM Autofocus Lens:

All my life I have dreamed of being a Free Lanse photographer. I have taken may thousands of photos. Tried to sell them with a continued response of Too much artifacting & too much noise. I bought a Top of the Line camera & was sooo disapointed to get the same results Too much artifacting & noise. Until I sent an e-mail out to one of the guys on NAPP. He told me if I wanted to compete with the PROS I had to use top of the line lenses like they were using.
How much is a dream worth?
It didn't take me long to order my new L-series Lens. I can really see the difference.
I chose a lense that I thought could give me the most versitility, in what I like to shoot. 28mm - 300mm.

Using this for landscapes, wildlife, the occasional portrait. It's built solid! Love the push/pull zoom on it, especially setting the tension to where the lens won't flop to zoom from gravity. Fast focus even in low light. Weighs double than the lens it replaced, but the quality is outstanding. Great piece of glass.

I had tried the fix 200mm, fix 300mm also the 70-200mm. But beside wild life I also love scenery and portrait so I pick the 28-300mm to fullfill my hobby. I love the quality of the picture I had. Now it is the only lens I carry with my Canon 7D + a monopod.

At a range from 50 to 250 with F8 + ISO 100 This lens gives rich sharp picture.

Comments about Canon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM Autofocus Lens:

I haven't had a chance to completely learn this lens yet, so take this with a grain of salt.

Build quality is definitely that of the 'L' series. I think it looks good and feels good in the hand. This is my first push/pull zoom and was worried about how I'd like that 'feature'. So far, I don't have any issues with it. The locking ring works well for me and I've developed a technique that allows me to use the ring with one hand. It takes some practice, but one-handed manipulation of the lock ring is doable. The weight doesn't bother me. I'll take extra weight for improved quality any day.

Having a 28-300mm range on one lens is just awesome. The obvious trade off is speed. At 3.5-5.6, it's much slower than my primes and constant aperture standard zooms. I have the 24L 1.4 II, the 300L 2.8, the 24-70 2.8, the 70-200 2.8... etc. The 28-300 isn't as sharp as my other lenses. And the 28-300 has some distortion as compared to my other lenses. The distortion is easily and automatically dealt with using Lightroom 3's lens correction feature provided that I shoot in RAW. This makes distortion a non-issue. The slight softness (There. I said it.) can be worked around using good shooting and post processing techniques. And it's here that I haven't completely 'learned' this lens. My results have been mixed. I've gotten some nice shots and lots of not so nice ones. I chalk it up to my poor skills (and they truly are). My current formula with this lens is to keep the ISO to 400 or less and to fill the frame as much as possible.

Autofocus. I've had some hit or miss experiences. I'm going to chalk this up to my skills (or lack thereof) as I sometimes get this even when using my other lenses.

Image Stabilizer. Fantastic. I like it al lot. Enough said.

The big question is, would I buy this lens again? I can't answer this, yet. I don't feel that I've had enough time to work with the 28-300. As it stands, I'd have a hard time giving up the range, the IS and the 'L' quality. As of now, I think this lens is the best in it's class.

Comments about Canon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM Autofocus Lens:

I am still getting used to the Lens. Here are some initial observations:

The Lens lives up to its reviews and capabilities.
The only draw back is its weight. I knew it would be heavy. As an all-around lens I will have trouble hiking with it and will use my Canon 28-135mm IS USM. The IS system performs per specificaton.

I have taken photos over the enire range of the lens and in various lighting conditions. The results were impressive.

Despite the heavy weight of this "L" seris lens it is a great all around lens. Going from 28mm to 300mm covers a great number of shots without changing lenses. The lens has the quality and feel of a Canon lens. Pictures are clear and sharp.
I purchased this lens as a "used" lens that was sent back to Canon for refurbishing and am truly amazed-- it looks like a brand new lens with NO SIGNS OF EVER BEING USED!!!!THANK YOU B&H!!!

Comments about Canon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM Autofocus Lens:

This lens has a very durable build quality, oozing heft and high quality feel. The push/pull zoom, pooh-pooed in many other reviews is really not a problem. I like the feel of the zoom and the slide action is smooth and easy. I have no trouble zooming quickly and keeping control. The locking/tightening ring works fine. As mentioned in almost every review, this lens is VERY HEAVY. You can feel the metal and glass in the heft. I am used to carrying my camera by the side grip. With this lens, I carry the camera by the lens. Picture quality: Excellent. Not the fastest lens, but very practical with the 28-300MM range. This is my first "L" lens and I can really tell the difference in the picture quality, even on my old 40D. This lens replaces my current kit 28-135MM and 70-300MM lenses. I am going to keep those lenses however, for inconspicuous travel purposes, because the new lens is pretty showy. I am very satisfied with this purchase.

Comments about Canon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM Autofocus Lens:

Excellent for landscape & low light images& extremely sharp.
Drawbacks-- very heavy-prefer ring focusing rather than pump action.
Despite its drawbacks i would still recommend it to my friends and acquaintances.
