Add the Matthews 6" PIN w/COLLAR - MAP6C to this item and you've got a sturdy, highly versatile light stand that allows you to place your light in just about any position imagineable. Discovered this via Joe McNally recommendation and am only sorry I did not know of it when I initially bought my strobes and their accompanying light stands.
Also, take care to weight the stand(sand bags or something) when using the arm in any sort of "boom" configuration.

Straight out the package, someone at the factory had slid the top section in while the paint was half dry so it looks really blotchy (showed Matthews the pictures but they didn't offer to replace it...I would have). The paint scrapes off pretty quickly when you screw in the knobs and attach lights to it. The black paint is also thick enough that the 5/8" arm is no longer 5/8" so you can't attach a light to the end of the arm.
Matthews really needs to look at a black chroming process. Look at Avenger if it truly is made of black steel. As it is, you might as well get it in chrome and spray paint it flat black or gaffer tape it if you want to avoid lens flare...I'd recommended you get the chrome version instead.

This is the light stand I always wanted!!! Don't waste money on buying light stands from companies that make your lights. One company overseas makes them all! But the C-stands and buy them once!!!

[...]Overall i have yet to use it, but it does make a very nice place holder in my living room with my light on it. So far it has been sturdy. im going to be testing it out within the next week so i guess we will see then. But the overall construction and build quality is exactly what you expect from matthews stands. You wont be disappointed in buying this stand. I got it specifically for my BD, so i think its gonna be a great asset to have

Comments about Matthews Hollywood Century C Stand Grip Head Kit, Black - 10.5' (3.2m):
I worked in G&E for three and a half years and know the ridiculous versatility of C Stands. As I'm mostly doing photography these days, I haven't needed them as much but there have been a few times where I know it would have allowed me to do what I needed.
To get to the point, C Stands are amazing. If you're not familiar with them, they will take a little getting use to and it's hard to even imagine how creative you can be with the positioning and combinatinos you can do with them.
The black looks cool, but that won't last long. Every time you set this stand up and use it, I'm sure you're going to be scraping some paint of. The all metal stands will look amazing years down the road, I think the black one is going to be beaten up in a couple months. But at least I know it will be strong and reliable for a long time to come.

Matthews is the standard bearer for grip and lighting control equipment and these stands are one of the main reasons why. The riser clamps and head clamps are some of the strongest I've ever used and you can rest assured any attached equipment will stay in place. All moving parts move smoothly and all connection points are strong. The stands are heavy, easy to use and will probably last a lifetime. The only issue I have with them is that these newer stands seem to have a slightly different design for the fold-up legs that doesn't work quite as smoothly as older models. This may simply be due to the fact that I've not used them enough to break them in yet.

Several weeks ago I purchased the C Stand for my new studio space. The intention was to use it strictly in studio for portrait work. The week it arrived I had a commercial location shoot and decided last minute to bring the C Stand along, just in case.
The C Stand was a stand out for the location shoot. The boom arm got my lighting where I needed it without an assistant booming the light in.
The weight, the stability, and portability makes the C Stand my new favorite light stand by far. I will be getting a second one soon for my studio and location work!
I have zero complaints about this product!

The C-stand will be found on any photo or video shoot. It has so many different uses other than just holding a light fixture. This version has a sliding leg allows the stand to sit vertical on a sloped surface. The black finish ensures it won't be reflected in shiny objects and won't be distracting on the set.
The Matthews Hollywood C Stand with grip head is well built, quick to setup and has hundreds of uses.

same great performance as the tried and true c-stands i have ....... BUT, the black is just paint and already scratching off, I was hoping for more of a "dyed metal" look that would stand up to the uses that a c-stand goes through

I use this stand to connect my Nikon sb 800 with umbrella as a overhead light. The stand is the best stand that I own. It is heavy duty and works great. I will definetly buy more Mathews products.

I bought these because i do a lot of shooting alone, so I needed something to hold light shaping tools, extra flashes, etc. These have been a life saver so far (imagination goes a long way). I can't imagine going on a shoot without them in reserve. I bought two initially, and plan to buy one more. They seem very well built and have a new locking system which is more secure. I'm only giving four stars because I haven't any long term experience using them, so I can't attest to their durability. Definitely would recommend as a basic piece of kit once you've progressed from the level of casual shooter.

last weekend i used my new c-stand for a shoot, but had several others rented as well. they were horrible, and i can't wait til i can afford to get a couple more of these to add to my kit.
i did scrape up the arm a little bit with a grip clip, but what the heck, i didn't buy this for it to look pretty.

These Matthews, I use regularly to put lights, an anything you can imagine and, and your creativity give you, usually in small spaces, so they are ideal, although it must be conciderar you'll need a box to ensure secure and safe, if the place where you will use can not be placed in the position required
and wrong is that they are heavy duty and as black as you can see more damaged
