The AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm provides a wide-angle to mid-telephoto zoom range in the DX Nikkor series. Designed specifically for use with Nikon digital cameras that feature the smaller DX size chip, this lens features ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass and Nikon's exclusive built-in SWM (Silent Wave Motor).
The lens is targeted at professional and advanced amateur Nikon D-SLR users who demand both the advantages of high optical performance and ultra-wideangle focal range.
This G-type Nikkor lens is designed with no aperture rings, and offers easier, virtually mistake-free operation because the aperture does not need to be set to minimum. Equivalent focal length in 35mm terms is 27-105mm.
Note! DX lenses are NOT recommended for use with 35mm, digital "full-frame" FX, or APS SLR cameras

I got this lens years ago as a kit lens for my D70. I have continued to use it with a D80 and D300. Compared with the newer kit lenses such as the 18-55; 18-105, 18-135, the build quality was significantly better than the others. I work in camera repairs, and we see the plastic Nikkors all the time. The glass seems great, but the plastic and build quality does not compare well with the 18-70 and the new 16-85 Vr lenses. I did need to have the encoder repaired, but the lens is fine now. Images consistently sharp.

I got this lens years ago with my D70s outfit. Great for learning, especially on landscapes, wide-angle, and pictures where you need a big DOF. Very limited for portraits (it maxes out at f/4 at 50mm). It's a great lens for beginners, but you may want to spend the extra $$ on a more versatile lens if you want full value out of your SLR.

I use this lens for still shots, sports, animals.
I really like the sharpness of the photos especially on still shots.
It is great for outdoor sports as long as you are not too far away from subject matter.
Having trouble with indoor sports shots, not sure if settings are right on camera or not. I keep changing to get the best shots.

This was the kit lens i got with my D200. I bought the 28-70 2.8 for $1500 bucks. I returned that lens because this lens worked better for my camera because of the DX crop. I bought a SB800 and 80-200 2.8 with the money from that returned lense. I pay bills with this lens

I am an amature photojournalist for my college paper. So far I have used this lens for sports photography and the construction occuring on my campus. The super wide angle is spectacular for capturing the large projects.
I use the lens on my D40 and to my suprise the auto focus works, and it creates clean crisp images.
The only issue I have encountered is sometimes the lens tricks out the light meter in my camera and the shutter speed reacts poorly. But for the most part, thus far its a great lens and the price was awesome. As a student its hard to afford more photo equiptment to play with. Thank you B&H!!

Comments about Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 G-AFS ED-IF DX Autofocus Lens:
My wife and I live and work in a beautiful landscape, and we both carry Nikon digital cameras (a D70 and a D200) wherever we go. We have several lenses from short to long, but found ourselves switching this one back and forth so often that we bought a second one. The range is just right for 95% of the non-wildlife photos that I take, and probably close to 100% for her uses. She is an artist and takes photos primarily to document scenes that she may want to paint. I am a wildlife biologist/conservation biologist and use my camera to document everything from small flowers and insects up to large landscapes. I now carry this lens on my camera most of the time and a longer AF VR-Nikkor 80-400 zoom in the camera case for those times that I need more reach.
A really good lens and a really good value!

Comments about Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 G-AFS ED-IF DX Autofocus Lens:
This is an excellent lens for the price. It is quite sharp at the center and, depending on the point in the zoom range, the corners are either nearly as sharp as the center or slightly less so, with mine being worst in this respect right around 24mm (I would expect there is decent sample variation at this price point though.) The lens isn't particularly fast and the f/3.5 aperture decreases towards f/4.5 pretty quickly through the zoom range but this, at least, is mitigated a bit by the fact that the lens tends to be pretty sharp even wide open and one stop down it seems to be pretty much at its peak. There is some fairly obvious barrel distortion at 18mm but I actually tend to like it as it exaggerates the wide perspective which can lend itself quite well to landscapes as well as other creative scenes. CA can be a definite issue with this lens although usually it can be fixed in post. Construction is pretty solid for what is essentially a "kit lens", it is better constructed than the Nikon 18-135 (mainly b/c of the metal lens mount) and also bests that lens in IQ and I feel that this lens is significantly better than the Canon 28-135 kit lens I owned both in construction and IQ, though if you are looking at this you probably weren't considering purchasing that lens anyway. The rubber seal around the mount and the included lens hood are nice additions and are far more functional than the distance scale which is pretty much useless. The weight and size are perfect for travel and as a walk-around lens. This is pretty much a perfect addition to your kit if you're starting out or just need (as I did) an inexpensive but good zoom in this focal length.

I use this lens most often on my D70, usually in the autofocus mode. My photos are always great. It is a rather heavy lens, so it makes the camera heavy to carry for long periods of time.

Comments about Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 G-AFS ED-IF DX Autofocus Lens:
I bought this lens w/ a brand new D300s for me and my wife. I am a videographer but needed a good still camera as well for the wife and heck, I'll use it too. Although this lens does not have VR its not a very long lens so going hand-held has still provided great results even at lower shutter speeds. I like it a lot!
Comments about Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 G-AFS ED-IF DX Autofocus Lens:
this lens came with my D-70 and I wanted to use it on my D-300 BUT a threaded screw came loose inside the camera and the zoom is now seized. The screw is about a quarter inch long with threads and its floating around under the glass. You can actually see it. The lenses was never dropped or hit on anything. How does a threaded screw work itself out? In my mind it doesn't unless it was never screwed in properly to begin with.

I keep this lens on my D80 all the time for most normal daily work as well as wedding, reception, and event jobs, changing out to the 70-300 as needed for closeups. This is my second 18-70; the first was dropped one too many times, but I liked it so much I bought another. There is very little, if any, distortion at the widest; focus is fast; prints are sharp. No complaints about anything.

We use this lens for weddings, portraits, and landscapes. My wife dropped it on asphault at a wedding shoot and shattered the UV filter but it did not hurt the lens. After purchasing the 24-70 and the 70-200 we put this one on the shelf. Recently I was picking out wedding shots to update our website and was surprised the metadata listed this lens used on the majority of those we picked as the best shots...even over the much more expensive Nikkors. It is a much better lens than the price would lead you to believe.

This has become the lens that just stays on my Nikon D-80. The range is very versatile and the focus is very responsive to the changing needs of wildlife photography. I have not yet found anything that I dislike about this great product and I would definitely recommend it to other photographers.

I bought this lens for close up action shots at motorcycle race meetings - both in the paddock and close up on track shots at motocross race meetings. Sharp pics, very light, not as sharp as prime 70-200mm but great value for money and filled in nice gap i had below 70-200 and 200-400 zooms.
