The Command 8 from Digidesign is a comparatively low cost eight fader control surface for Pro Tools TDM or LE systems running on Windows XP or Mac OS X. While there are several compact control surface options from third-party manufacturers compatible with Pro Tools, this unit was specifically developed for Pro Tools and as a result provides a great deal more sophisticated control over the software.
The Command 8 connects to the computer via USB and the eight bankable channel faders are motorized and touch sensitive. The eight rotary encoders with LED rings can be automated and will control a range of parameters including panning and plug-in control. The onboard monitor system accommodates Pro Tools audio along with external inputs, speakers, and separately controlled headphone outs.
The Command 8 also includes an integrated, fully editable MIDI interface and features a stand-alone MIDI controller mode. For post-production suites, Avid products are natively supported by the control surface, including Avid Media Composer. Additionally, the onboard monitor section alleviates the need for an external mixer for speaker control.

Comments about Digidesign Command 8 Control Surface:
Lasted just over a year before the unit failed completely. The fail problem (faint display/faders going crazy on power-up) seems to be pretty commmon on the Avid forums. Since Avid is aware of it, they should offer to cover the $60 per hour bench fees & parts for all systems, not just those under warranty.

I use this for a home post-production studio, and have used it at studios around town before. Great, affordable way to get the tactile feel you need when mixing.
