Manfrotto 046MC Expan Drive with Metal Chain
The Manfrotto 046MC Expan Drive with Metal Chain incorporates two expandable core units. One side has a large toothed gear to which a metal link chain affixes, permitting convenient raising and lowering of the background paper roll. The other side has an adjustable tension drag. The double core units are unique in that when the overall screw on which the drive unit is mounted is tightened the drive expands from a minimum of 1.8" to 2". To accommodate cored paper rolls in any length, all you do is insert the Expans at both ends, tighten up until they're snug and mount the entire assembly on your background holder hooks.

The metal chains are worth the money, no doubt! I use the ones with the metal chains for the vinyl and the plastic chains with paper.
I wish these were less expensive, it seems like the price that Manfrotto is charging for the difference in chains is gouging.

This item works ok but is long overdue for a redesign. When used for heavy canvas backgrounds you have to set the brake very tight to keep the background from completely unrolling. This makes it nearly impossible to wind the background back onto the roller. This item should have an auto releasing brake when the chain is being pulled from either side...doesn't seem like it would be that hard. The chain retainers break easily, especially when there is some age on them. I looked into the electric models but they are just too expensive for what your getting. I have the bracket mounted about 13' and the chain is too short...had to purchase another chain and add on. Also can't tell what color you're getting...tried to find out from B&H but it was a waste of time.

Hey does anyone know of a good way to stop them rolling to the end of the paper? I put the chain over a nail in the wall
or stopping the chain from looping over itself and getting snarled?

the system itself is okay: does the job! but don't even think about buying the plastic chain. the metal chain - in my opinion - is already flimsy and will hopefully last some years, with good luck!
