ReCycle 2.1 from Propellerhead is a creative software tool for groove manipulation. In simple terms, the software lets you do with sampled loops what you can do with beats programmed from individual drum sounds - like alter the tempo, or replace sounds and process them individually. ReCycle works by analyzing your groove and breaking it up into its rhythmic components, allowing you to change the tempo or the pitch, without one affecting the other.

Let's say you have a sample of a drum loop that you want to use in a track. The loop's tempo is 108 BPM and the track's is 90 BPM. Previously you had two options. You could pitch down the loop, making the loop sound very different, and if there are harmonies in the loop, they may not match to your song. Or you could time stretch it, but that will make the loop sound different, usually losing some "punch" in the loop.

Instead of stretching the sample, ReCycle REX files are sliced into little pieces so that each drum hit (or whatever sound you are working with) gets its own slice. When you then change the tempo of the loop, the time between the slices is stretched, instead of the slices themselves. Slicing a loop gives you individual control over both the sound of the slices and the timing. You can rearrange the loop, change the feel of it, replace parts of the loop with other samples, pitch it, and much more.

The process itself is fully automated, but the slices are available to move, audition or delete, using the programs on-screen tools and controls. Other tools allow you to set the length, attack and decay of the slices, and to change your groove's overall tempo or pitch, without one affecting the other. Or use the software's signal processors (compressor, EQ and Transient Designer) to give it punch and distinction. Anything you choose to do can be applied to the loop non-destructively and saved as a new file.

When you load a sound into ReCycle, the program "looks" at the file, analyzes it, and breaks it up into its rhythmic components
Once a loop is processed, the ways its components are played back are completely independent of each other
The resulting REX file can be rearranged, pitched or have its tempo freely adjusted - you have full control over the individual slices and can alter the timing or even quantize the groove - or keep the feel of the loop, but replace the sounds with your own
Load a drum loop into ReCycle, set a new tempo or pitch, and save the results as a new file
Use ReCycle's on-screen signal processors - compressor, EQ, envelope and Transient Designer - to give it some punch and distinction
A sensitivity function allows control over the size of the individual slices that are being generated
Anything you choose to do in ReCycle can be applied to your loop non-destructively and saved as a new file
Don't like the snare sound? Replace individual slices with your own samples
You can silence and move individual hits, and change volume and panning of slices
When you have created the groove you want, create new variations and fills out of the single phrase
Use the feel of the groove to quantize other MIDI recordings
The included Reason Adapted application is a streamlined version of the award-winning music software Reason, fully equipped with REX players, sampler, mixer and effects, plus a fast sequencer that lets you put your recycled breaks and grooves to use right away
All the devices included function just the way they do in the full version of Reason - the cables on the back of the rack allow for the creative and flexible patching
Reason Adapted supports ReWire for seamless integration with other sequencing software
Also included is a detailed, hour-long video tutorial from ASK Video to help you get started with the ReCycle toolkit

Comments about Propellerhead Software ReCycle 2.1 - Loop Manipulation Software:

This is great software for chopping up samples but is useless without Reason and Reason is seriously hampered without Recycle. This should be cheaper or a part of Reason. It just seems like PH is [*] their customers.

Comments about Propellerhead Software ReCycle 2.1 - Loop Manipulation Software:

If you work with audio loops, particularly drum loops, then you need Propellerhead Recycle. I've been on the fence with this one for a while and finally decided to get it. I'm glad I did. Nothing else makes chopping up drum loops as easy and as efficient as Recycle.

Comments about Propellerhead Software ReCycle 2.1 - Loop Manipulation Software:

This is a great tool for any user of samplers, but if you plan on using Reason you should have this tool. It makes Dr. Rex an incredibly versatile hybrid sampler/arrangement tool. I actually tend to use it for unamp'd guitar parts so that i can rearrange particular notes of particular phrases to try out different feels. The "loopifying" of any source material takes a minute or two -- very simple.
