Comments about Sound Devices 722 2-Channel High-Resolution Portable Recorder:
The Sound Devices 722 two-channel hard-disk/Compact Flash recorder, introduced ca. 2005, is for the serious recordist blessed with considerable attention to detail. Whether put to work for the audio component of video, for portable location recording (its forte), or as a high-end reporter's tool, it is a wonderfully durable and thoroughly conceived piece of gear. Once you learn to navigate the sizable onboard menu, correctly choose among the encyclopedic settings, and create your own custom function templates, it is swift to set up and bullet-proof for recording, playback, or transferring data files. If you are fanatical about safeties and back-ups, this is that rare recorder that, without mods or non-standard add-ons, will record simultaneously to THREE secure destinations: its internal HD (160GB), a FAT 32-formatted CF card (presently up to 32GB), and to a compatible external HD (FireWire, incl. buss-powered). It has a greater range of sampling rates (up to 192kHz) and encodings/decodings (MP3, M-S miking & monitoring) than some users may know exist. It powers 48vDC phantom mics via its own crisp, transparent mic pre-amp or accepts line or digital inputs. The 722 has balanced analog/digital in (XLR3), balanced analog out (mini-XLR), a variey of clocking & balanced or SPDIF digital BNC jacks, and Sound Devices' own jacks for daisychaining with other 7 Series gear. The headphone amp (mini jack) delivers gratifying oomph and clarity. The adjustable metering and time readouts (absolute or 24-hour time stamps) work in any ambient light, and you can even put the function LEDs in stealth mode, for light-critical environments.Do NOT acquire the 722 unless you treasure enormous flexibility of function, appreciate massive record times at all sampling & bit settings, and value absolute reliability. Priced at just under [$], the 722 is a powerful audio tool of standard-defining professional quality.

Comments about Sound Devices 722 2-Channel High-Resolution Portable Recorder:
This unit provides sound quality of such high definition that you will wonder if the sound came from the recording or something in the room while you were listening. With such high quality, the definition is as good as the microphone you pair up with it. The size and weight is very comfortable and something that is easy to carry around for hours for field work. The menus are very easy to learn and will start recording regardless of what menu it is displaying. One of the best qualities of this unit is that it has a Sony camcorder rechargeable battery. That means that spare batteries are easy to come by.
