Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
The "petal" shape of this lens hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area. This dedicated lens hood is designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

I bought this as a replacement for a lens hood I dropped out of a hot air balloon. It's the manufacturer's replacement and is identical to the hood I got with the lens. It works well to avoid flare but suffers from the same fault that cause me to lose the first one: it rotates and unscrews from the lens to easily. The lock position isn't overly secure. It does tuck nicely inverted on the lens when not in use which is great for saving space in the bag. It's better than getting the kind that screws into the filter threads on the lens though.

I use this mostly for protection as I usually don't have problems with lens flare. Prior to this I have only ever had experience with Canon lens hoods and this one is no where near the quality. It seems flimsy, bends easy when pressure is applied. But all in all it gets the job done. Also make sure that your lens purchase doesn't already include one of these before you buy. I stupidly bought this only to find a second one in the box with my lens.

The fit of the hood is perfect (not binding on threads like some others). It is not too bulky and is durable.

I use the new lens hood all the time to improve contrast when the sun is out. It does a great job making the colors pop rather than having a hazy photo. Nothing bad to say.

So I'm a sucker for lens hoods. Some people hate em, some people love em, some don't think they do anything. But in my experience they make all the difference. This hood does a great job blocking unwanted sun flare, I also believe that having a hood on your lens makes you look a tad more professional, just my opinion. I love this hood, snaps on, feels very secure.

I do not have much to say about ths lens hood other than it was necassary . HOWEVER, buying a Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 was one of the best buys I ever made for my cannon! Unfortunantly, the hood did not come with it. Thus, the purchase. The clarity of the lens is magnificent! And I purchased that from B&H also!

I own a lot of Tamron Lenses and i had an incident where my hood cracked. I inquired to a number of shops here and abroad but they do not sell these.
Good thing they are available here. :)

It is easy to loose such hoods if you get in a hurry and don't stow it on the lens. And it is hard to get the exact replacement even from Tamron.

I have lost my lens hood for my Tamron 17-50 lens. Somehow it came off while travelling. I was glad to find the exact same hood here at BnH store, although I thought it was a little expensive.

This lens hood is well made, solid, and unobtrusive. The 90 degree twist to fit or remove makes it much quicker to fit than the cheap aftermarket screw-in type, and can be fitted forward for use or reversed for transporting.
Highly recommended over aftermarket ones, and it goes without saying that the service provided by BH Photo when purchasing this item was excellent.

This hood is phenomenal. Its sturdy enough for its material, and unobtrusive when it comes to handling and storage. The same hood comes with then lenses its designed for (in my case, the Tamron 17-50) and its a bit pricey to replace unfortunately. But, it is nonetheless worth the cost if a waterfall ate your hood as it did mine!
