The Sony MDR-DS3000 is an infrared wireless headphone system, transmitting in stereo or surround with Sony's proprietary Logic 3D Processor and fast triple speed Logic 3D processing circuitry, and offers decoding of most of the premier surround sound formats currently in use.
The MDR-DS3000 system is designed to emulate and reproduce the spatial impression of the multi-channel, multi-speaker listening experience, and offers decoding of a variety of Dolby surround modes, with full 5.1 surround support.
The MDR-DS3000 system provides transmission and reception within a 23' range, and a 90° reception area. The headphones may be purchased separately for multiple usage, simultaneously. The transmitter provides both an optical digital input for DVD or home theater multichannel amplifier connectivity, and RCA analog stereo line inputs for connection to stereo devices.
The MDR-DS3000 is uniquely designed and engineered, and surprisingly affordable.

I bought this product from B&H because they had the best price. After doing research on which wireless surround sound headphones to buy I ended up with this unit because it was the only one capable of adding a second headphone set to be use by more than 1 person at a time.I have an 11 month old daugther who goes to bed early. I wanted to watch movies and TV shows with my wife without waking up the baby up. THIS WORKS perfect. The unit is comfortable and the sound is pretty good. (It could use a little more base) I never planted to walk around the house with the headphones on so the fact that it was infrared and not RF was not a factor for me. You should have the base at the same level as the heaphones when in use for the hiss to go away. If they are not aligned you may hear a low hissing noise when quiet scenes come on.I haven't had any listeners fatigue while using the headphones yet. The volume and dolbu digital sound is pretty decent. ( Cannot be compared with a good surround system - no headphones ) of course but it does the job right.I don't have a reference point to compare them with other units like the Pioneer or the DS6000 so I can't say that the others are better. The ability to use a second headphone set with the same base is what sold it for me. Being able to use an unlimited amount of headphone sets is definitely a plus.Note: You may want to buy an Optical sound splitter from [...] or somewhere like that so you can enjoy more than 1 unit. Ex. I have my Direct TV receiver's optical output connected to the splitter, and from the splitter I have two optical cables going out: one to the headphone's base and the other to my Yamaha receiver ( to listen to surround without the headphones).Overall: This unit does exactly what I expected it to do. Haven't found anything really problematic with it EXCEPT: It's a mission to get the headphones attached correctly on the base for charging purposes (the design for this feature is just not up to par with the whole overall design of Sony DS3000)

I am hearing impaired, the Sony MDR-DS300 System works great I no longer have to CRANK UP the volume on the TV. Now the only noise my family hears is me laughing at my shows, its nice to hear what they are saying on TV.

This is my second set. I bought these for the bedroom. I can use my MDR-IF3000 extra set of headphones with either of the two bases I currently own. My first set I have had it for about a year now and no problems whatsoever. I'm happy with the products durability and overall performance. Connected via optical. Great, great product. Only complaint is that it take a little bit of moving back and forth to place the headphones to charge on the base. Just because of the connection setup that Sony implemented.

My husband is hard of hearing. Previous headphone sets were not as comfortable; the sound was not as good; and most importantly no matter what the volume is on the television itself he is able to adjust the headphones to his satisfaction.
Excellent!!!!!

Comments about Sony MDR-DS3000 - Infrared Stereo Headphone System:
This product has amazing sound. It is easy to install and one of the ONLY headphones that has optical audio input. My TV only has an optical audio out plug which means regular analog cordless headphones are useless. My big complaint... and it is a problem each time I use it - is that it is really hard to get the headphones back on the base to charge them. Ridiculously hard. Come on, Sony, you can do better than this. That's why I didn't give the product all 5 stars.

Comments about Sony MDR-DS3000 - Infrared Stereo Headphone System:
I purchased these headphones because I wanted to listen to television at night without worrying about disturbing my sleeping kids in a nearby bedroom. The headphones are comfortable to wear and the sound quality seems just fine for my purposes. The headphones do deliver a virtual surround sound effect, though not nearly as good as listening to a real 5.1 or 7.1 speaker system. Because I have no problem maintaining line of sight to the base anywhere in my room, I have experienced no dropouts. I have a few minor criticisms, which is why I gave the headphones 4 stars. (1) As others have noted, it is a little tricky getting the headphones lined up to dock properly in the base for recharging; (2) it would be nice if multiple optical ports were incorporated instead of just one. This might not be a problem if the sound for all of your different components is routed through one receiver. However, for me I will either have to purchase an accessory from Sony or manually unplug and replug from the particular source; (3) the base is a little "plasticky" (but otherwise functional)

Comments about Sony MDR-DS3000 - Infrared Stereo Headphone System:
Overall, good product.
Great sound quality as long as you stay in sight of the infrared transmitter.
Hoverver, there are two things that i find somewhat annoying :
1 - The contact point for between the headphones and the base in order to charge the batteries is very tricky and requires multiple tries in order to allign it correctly.
2 - The volume control on the headset is hard to play with and you almost have to take them off in order to be able to see and manipulate the sound wheel.

Comments about Sony MDR-DS3000 - Infrared Stereo Headphone System:
I bought this as a low cost replacement for my old Sony Infrared Surround Headphones. My old system was unable to decode DTS and also lacked Dolby Pro Logic II.
The MDR-DS3000 has a great little processor and helped me catch up with audio technology so I could enjoy my Blu Ray. However, the headphones that are part of the system are too noisy. Infrared is not supposed to hum and buzz. I suspect cheap circuitry has sabotaged these phones. Also, it makes distracting noise if you move them against the headrest of your theatrical seating.
Solution - I use my old MDR-IF5000 headphones instead. These were truly professional phones - no hum, no buzz, no scraping noises from contact with headrest. I will buy MDR-IF8000 phones if my old ones go rather than being forced to use the ones supplied with MDR-DS3000.
I highly recommend this product to anyone who wants to upgrade from their MDR-DS5000 but don't want to spend all their money on the pricier MDR-DS8000 Surround system. Keep your old earphones!

Sony infrared wireless headphones added to complete Sony home theater system to facilitate listening options. They work great and provide good sound, especially when watching 5.1 movies. Took a while to determine how to hook them up with existing LCD, stereo receiver, and HD DVR satelite receiver. Optical cable provided with headphones was the answer, when connected to HD DVR. Just turn down the sound to "Min" and enjoy via headphones. Pretty easy once set up. I would recommend headphones to others for this application. Confidence in Sony products also helps.

Ideal for home cinema use. Surprising Dolby 5.1 surround effects. With the cinema effect selected and with a Dolby Digital or DTS sound source through optical cable, you feel the sound all around your head almost like a regular sound system with subwoofer. Volume control on each headphone. I bought the system with 2 additionnal headphones. Best sound quality within a 10 feet range. Not recommended for listening to quiet music. You can use ordinary AAA batteries.
