This Impact 8' Light Stand is aluminum, 4 sections, with sure-twist section locks. It rises to a maximum height of 8'.
If you forget to tighten any section with your light mounted, the light slowly descends, thanks to the air-cushioning of this stand.
This useful feature saves equipment and fingers from harm during busy photo sessions.

Sufficiently sturdy yet light weight and well made. Great price. You may need a sandbag if you extend it all the way to 8 feet high, especially if it's windy outside and the wind blows on your umbrella. Even other brands will tip over when wind blows on the umbrella, so there's no point spending more money on a more sturdy/more heavy lightstand.

The first time I tried to use these they just fell apart. One stand I could understand but the second one fell apart too. I got them in the Quantum light kit for basically nothing but, sadly, that's about what they are worth.
I'd explain in greater detail how they "fell apart" but it's hard to explain. Just visualize that you can move the poles/rods/whatever up and down without loosening the screws or whatever they are called. When you do loosen the screws, just the screw piece moves up and down the pole. Weird, uh? Makes it really hard to keep a light pointed in the right direction or at the correct height when you can't tighten anything.
I hope that made sense. I feel pretty idiotic trying to explain it! :-p
Hoping to find an alternative that's light weight but better quality.

I was expecting what I paid for...a frugal stand that will be sturdy but leaves room for improvement and future purchase. I've had this for a few months now and I couldnt see needing something heftier. Great stand. Very happy with the purchase.

Comments about Impact Air Cushioned Black Stand:
Bought two of these stands to replace two from a light kit I sold. They are great for off camera flash in a Strobist set up. They easily handle my umbrella adapter, 43" umbrella's and my Nikon flashes. They are lightweight for easy transport but as with any outdoor set up, should be sand bagged. Being air cushioned is a big plus. Though some of the components are plastic, at this price point, they are an excellent choice.

I use this stand to hold my speedlights and umbrellas. Work well and it is easy to adjust. It's lightweight, cheap and so far no problems. I also recommend "Interfit Stand Bag". Bag has enough space for 3 stands and 3 umbrellas 45" long, and cost only [$].Best regards Pawel

So far, so good. It is a low cost stand, but it is serving me well. It feels solid enough. I use it inside with a 60" softliter umbrella. I have not tried it outside yet in wind.

I use this stand with a continuous light and it works great. You can make the base quite wide for stability and it adjusts smoothly and easily.

These are great for the price. The ones that I purchased stick a little when raise and lower them but, it's tolerable. I own other more expensive stands and for the most part these are equally as good only a lot more affordable.

Home studio use mostly. Solid build for a light weight stand. Easy to operate and expand/contract. Holds speedlights and any size umbrella. I wouldnt trust anything heavier fully expanded to 8 feet, as it gets very unstable up there. Love the portability. Would definitely need sand bag for outdoor use.

This worked excellent for the fixture I am using. (This was part of a kit.) This is a great balance of inexpensive and light and well-constructed. There may be stands that are sturdier and more expensive, but these would be overkill for the use intended.

I bought this light stand to hold a Nikon SB-600 flash at my son's indoor track meets. I have also used it for portraits. This is a perfect light stand for a casual user. The only reason that I didn't give it five stars is that when fully extended, it doesn't seem very sturdy.

Comments about Impact Air Cushioned Black Stand:
It is crazy how much light stands can cost. These get the job done, but only time will tell how long they will last. They seem to be quite well constructed and they are very stable. I am a little worried about how much abuse the little plastic knobs will take. The price can't be beat, though.
