The 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 DC lens was exclusively designed to suit the characteristics of digital SLR cameras. Ideal as a full-range telephoto zoom lens, this compact telephoto zoom lens provides an equivalent range of approx. 88-320mm when used with a Canon digital SLR camera (*).
DC lenses are exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras. The image circle (rear of lens) is made to match the smaller dimensions used for the image sensor on digital cameras. As a result these lenses are also more compact and lightweight, and are better matched to digital SLR cameras.
Note! (*) Not suitable for 35mm film SLR cameras or for any digital SLR camera with image sensor bigger than APS-C size, e.g. 1D series or Kodak Pro SLR/c.

Bought previous version for my starter lens, and was quite happy. Killed the autofocus after a bit more than a year. Used for sports, taking hundreds of photos a night, so purchased again as I was happy overall. Once again, around the year mark, it died again. I called Sigma, and they said based on my description that the aperture fins are sticking and guessed it would cost about $80 to fix. Would recommend with a warning that it may not last under high use. Focused quickly enough for me, but maybe that's a matter of comparison to the others I've got. Tried a Tamron, found it was too slow, and considering Canon now.

Comments about Sigma 55-200mm f/4-5.6 DC Lens for Digital EOS:
I use this lens mainly outdoor since it is at best a f/4 lens. This makes shooting indoors tricker unless you have adequate lighting. It's great having this lens adds a lot to the way I can shoot. As people before have said, the zoom is stiff, but you get used to it. It also seems a little flimsy, but other than that, it's great.

This lens is good, but not great. Its not as well constructed as a Canon lens, but for the money (half the price) it does a good job at taking great pictures for a photographer on a budget.

Comments about Sigma 55-200mm f/4-5.6 DC Lens for Digital EOS:
Not too shabby for an inexpensive pair of lens. Although the other reviews are right, it does take a little while for it to auto-focus. But takes great pictures! I'd recommend it for anyone who a little short on cash!!
Comments about Sigma 55-200mm f/4-5.6 DC Lens for Digital EOS:
Built like a rock, but takes pictures like one of those $8trillion lenses they have floating around.Great color, mediocre contrast (easy fix), and wonderfuldepth of field.Does very well in bright situations. Absolute murder on darkshoots. There is no such thing as auto focus after about 7PM with this lens.
Expertise: Amateur
Problems Encountered: Auto focus freaks out every once in a while, and will startdoing some ridiculous things. Like focus at 1.1 feet for noreason and say it is in focus when my subject is a pierabout 800 feet away. The zoom isn't very smooth, but that isn't really toobothersome. Some problems with condensation gathering inside the lensafter significant temperature changes, but it actually ledto some neat photos. And it went away after a bit.Auto focus ceases to function in dim to dark situations.
Comments about Sigma 55-200mm f/4-5.6 DC Lens for Digital EOS:
I first encountered this product while on vacation down in FLA. There was a guy on the beach with one attached to his Canon Digital. I asked him what he thought and he said it's a good performer where price and general use (plus abuse) come together.A couple of weeks later I bought one and he was right. It's a solid performer and without all the fancy glass inside. Straight forward, good looking shots. BETTER THAN THE PRICE INDICATES!
Expertise: Intermediate +
Problems Encountered: Sometimes a bit iffy on the AF. Switch to Manual and it works great.

Comments about Sigma 55-200mm f/4-5.6 DC Lens for Digital EOS:
It's good glass if you can't really afford one of the more high-quality ones. It does take really good pictures, but if feels like the tube that's left over from toilet paper. I needed a lens like this for multi-purpose shots and it fit my budget. The reaction speed is a little slow, but you can't expect too much for a buck fifty. It is well worth the money.
Problems Encountered: None so far

Comments about Sigma 55-200mm f/4-5.6 DC Lens for Digital EOS:
I have to admit that I bought this lens because it is so cheap (pricewise) and didn't use it much at first - my Canon 17-40mm L lens is always at the ready. Eventually I put the Sigma through many test shots. I really was amazed. Shots at short end were handheld and stopped down 3 settings. Others to the long end were on tripod -the 1.6 factor required it- and again the quality was almost equal to the Canon L lens except lower contrast(easily sorted in Photoshop) Maybe I was just lucky to get a better version but I am getting excellent 15x10 prints. Don't always believe the 'tecchie' reviews with graphs etc get a trial run from the seller, (I have no connection with Sigma whatsoever)

Comments about Sigma 55-200mm f/4-5.6 DC Lens for Digital EOS:
Its a just decent lens... I'm just starting out, so i didn'tneed anything to great, and i didn't have much money so thiswas perfect!I got this lens over some of the other ones i was looking at(various 70-300mm) because it is very compact and about thesame size as the canon 18-55mm stock lens at its longestlength... this lens is a pretty light lens. it seems very well built and for 150 is the best 55-200 lensfor the price... but it has a slow AF, and sometimes doesn'tknow what to focus on... but it has pretty sharp images atall lengths..
Problems Encountered: not a smooth zoom
