The Nikon TC-17E II was designed exclusively for use with AF-S and AF-I lenses, and completes the Nikon lineup of 1.4x, 1.7x, and 2.0x compact teleconverters. This teleconverter will maintain full metering and focusing with compatible cameras and lenses, and will also support the VR function found on many of the newer professional lenses.

The AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II allows focal length to be extended by a factor of 1.7 times while retaining a sense of overall comfort in the hand. Many such teleconverters can also have a detrimental effect on the speed of the lens, however the AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II makes available f-stops only 1.5 stops slower.

NOTE: Due to the high-quality design of this converter (7 elements/4 groups), the teleconverter will only fit and work with a select range of lenses.

NOTE: Autofocusing only possible when used with D1, D1X, D1H, D2H, D100, F5, F100, N90s, N80, N75 and N65 AF SLR Cameras (or any newer models).

Lens Compatibility
The following lenses may be used with the Nikon TC-17E II, some with noted functional limitations. NIKKOR lenses not listed cannot be used with the TC-17E II. The list includes current lenses along with lenses for which production may have ceased. Lenses that are no longer in production are shown only for your convenience as a compatibility reference.

I have a new nikon 70 - 200 2.8 VRII lens and the Nikon 200 - 400 f4 vr and a D300. I originally got this product for the 200-400 to get more reach when shooting birds.
When the teleconverter arrived the big lens was out at Nikon for repair so I tried it out on the 70 - 200. The new 70 - 200 is a scary sharp lens to begin with. Putting on this converter gave me very good results. The images were very sharp and the autofocus worked perfectly. The other nice thing is that the size of the combination is easy to carry around as opposed to the very heavy 200-400.

I tested it out on the 200 - 400 Which makes it into a 680mm lens. With a 1.5 factor from the D300 I have a 1000mm lens. The biggest problem is light. you need to be shooting on a bright day to get a shutter speed high enough to avoid shake or subject movement. That makes closing down problematic. I've never shot with a 1000mm lens. With a lens that long it's very difficult to find your subject. I'm shooting with a gimbal mount on a big tripod. A jumbo jet flew overhead and I couldn't get it in the viewfinder in time for a shot. I can't imaging finding a little bird in flight.

The 200 - 400 isn't as sharp as the 70 - 200 to begin with. When you put the 1.7 tc on it you can definitely tell that the lens quality is degraded. It's still good but not really up to the standards of a professional lens.

I think this addition to my bag will be a way for me to easily carry around a 'long' lens.

The teleconverter works well in that it only slightly reduces AF speed and gives me back some of the reach I was missing by going full-frame. It is also much cheaper than a lens with equivalent focal length (though spendier than I believe it should be). Image quality is acceptable with the 70-200 2.8 on a D3.

With that specific lens, images look a lot sharper when stopped down to 5.6, zoomed to something less than full telephoto, and focused on something less than infinity. In a worst case scenario (wide open at 4.8, zoomed to 340mm, focused to infinity) there is obvious softness and fringing.

Comments about Nikon TC-17E II 1.7x Teleconverter for AF-S:

Great telelconverter. I mainly used Nikon's 1.4x teleconverter at various newspapers before taking the plunge and buying my own. Read great reviews and so far so good. Only negative is that you're stuck at f/4 which makes it tricky for indoor sports, or weddings in large churches.
But I shot at a college football game with it on my 70-200 V1 and had excellent results. Though I always feel silly next to the other guys with the big glass.
    Good for the price though!

Comments about Nikon TC-17E II 1.7x Teleconverter for AF-S:

Use for Nature photography particularly wildlife. Like that it is always available without the weight, bulk or cost of a larger lens particularly when hiking in the back country. I am using it with the 70-200 F2.8 VR II Nikon lens and accept the f stop loss in exchange for the 70% increase magnification. This loss is about equal to using a polaroid filter. I often compensate by removing the latter to avoid the accumulative effect in low light or active critters. Seems to be fully compatible and at full power shows up as 340X in the metadata. Since I using a D300 DX camera that provides 510X. Otherwise have not found any additional downsides.

Comments about Nikon TC-17E II 1.7x Teleconverter for AF-S:

I bought this with the 70-200 f/2.8 VRII. My first pics were with the 1.7x TC and they were good, but not great. I love how I can get close to birds that I never could before.

I think the picture quality will improve with practice, especially with respect to focus, and getting used to the depth of field. With the 1.7x TC, the meter on my D90 reads f/4.8 when the aperature is wide open (I think because of the reduction in light? -1.5 stops). But the photos appear to still have the depth of field of the f/2.8 aperture in the lens.

I am happy with the TC, just need more practice to get the shots I really expected.

Comments about Nikon TC-17E II 1.7x Teleconverter for AF-S:

Perhaps I should give this a 4.5 rating so far, but I don't feel that I have really put it through it's paces in tough situations yet so I am being conservative. So far I have only used it on my f2.8 70-200 VRII. Is there a loss of sharpness? Sure, but not to any unacceptable level. The lens still seems to auto-focus very quickly and so far the loss of 1.5 stops has not been an issue. I am hoping that it works as well in lower light situations as I shoot a good deal of live music. I decided to get this after they put all the photogs at the sound board instead of in the pit for a show and the longest lens I had only went to 200mm. Now I can quickly and easily reach 340mm without paying thousands of dollars or carrying extra great weight.
I am confused by reviews that say attaching this extender is difficult. I guess some folks don't know how to match the dots and twist. It's quick and easy.

Pros: It gives you the extra 1.7x so if you need it.. its the way to go.
Cons. If your using the 2.8 lens your widest opening will be at 4.8..

This wont fit in the pocket of a tight pair of jeans, so if you want to remove it while traveling you will need some sort of bag (fanny pack will work too, its not that large.)

I have been reluctant to use TCs because of their potential for softening the image. After reading the reviews though, I decided to try the 1.7 with my new 70-200mm VRII. I have been very pleased with the image quality and can highly recommend it with compatible lenses.

Using on a 70-200 2.8 VR and the focus remains lightning fast. The loss of stops def. became hindrance in my first shoot forcing the ISO to creep up a bit past where I would like. Overall if you have to make a tradeoff for the distance I would highly recommend.

As you would expect from Nikon it works. You loose A little light 2 f stops . On a 2.8 lenz not such a big deal on a 4.5 or higer f stop lenz you need good light or it wont work well.

Comments about Nikon TC-17E II 1.7x Teleconverter for AF-S:

I use the 1.7 TC with the Nikon 300mm f2.8. It works well when I need just a little more magnification. Of course the maximum f stop goes to 4.76 with the TC and focus slows slightly. But that is small price to pay for the extra 210mm. Anyone using a TC of any kind should be aware there is no free lunch. There will be slight image degradation with its use. Of course the 300mm f2.8 is razor sharp even wide open so the degradation is quite small and is noticeable only with careful study of the image.

Comments about Nikon TC-17E II 1.7x Teleconverter for AF-S:

This TC was designed exclusively for AF-S lenses. I think this constraint helped make it a practical solution for the 1.7 magnification factor. The images are very sharp at the expense of 1 f/stop. The VRII and AF work very well .I love the product. This makes the 70-200 VRII lens a 510mm on a DX body. I would not hesitate to purchase.

Comments about Nikon TC-17E II 1.7x Teleconverter for AF-S:

Mixed feelings with this Nikon Product.
                              PROS:
                              1. Well built.
                              2. Supposed to have great glass.
                              3. Seemless (almost not noticeable) with Nikon Lenses.

                              CONS:
                              1. Expansive Product
                              2. Sad that it will ONLY work with very few Nikon lenses.
                              3. Stranger that other manufacturers make similar products that work with far more lenses.

                              What's the deal here?
I stayed with Nikon, and feel that I was punished!
Now I have 100's of dollars waiting around.
Will not work with 80-200 f/2.8

Used with Nikkor 200 / 400 F4 IF ED II Pro Zoom.
                              1. Still produces very sharp results. No need to stop down.
                              2. Slows down AFS Auto focus on subjects with lack of decent contrast.
                              3. Excellent value for 680mm capability

I received the poduct last week and this weekend I went to the river to take pictures of the rowing teams on the river. I used the teleconverter with my Nikor 70-200mm. So far, it performed well. The images looked sharp.

Comments about Nikon TC-17E II 1.7x Teleconverter for AF-S:

I ordered the Nikon TC-17E II 1.7 Teleconverter to go with my new Nikon 300mm 2.8 lens. [...] I shot practical tests of local street traffic with and without the teleconverter. After blowing them up to 11" X 14" the shots WITH the teleconverter almost seemed sharper than the lens without the teleconverter, if that's possible. The results were very sharp. The VR and autofocus on the 300mm 2.8 worked perfectly with the teleconverter attached. Of course, you loose almost 2 stops, but for working outdoors shooting sports or wildlife, a 510mm (full frame) f4.5 lens comes in pretty handy!
