Comments about LumiQuest Book: Flash - The Most Available Light by Quest C. Couch III:
When I picked my first Canon pro speedlite, I was overwhelmed as to what the heck to do with it. I was bewildered between the slew of shutter/aperture/iso/flash power settings. Then you factor in light fall off and all of the other factors associated with a mounted (or off) flash head, and its easy to feel overwhelmed with the science of it all. This book was a god-send in that it explained to me the benefits, characteristics, limiations, and techniques to control your flash creativity. Thanks to this book I learned to turn ETTL (training wheels) off and actually take the pictures I envisioned before hand. The book was short on real world senarios - I thought there would be more. It's half theory so you'll get an understanding of terminology where understanding is needed. Overall, it's not the longest read, but it's it's a solid summary of lighting and you should you feel well schooled when you're done with it. There are excellent illustrations of the behavior of light in relation to subjects, bouncing surfaces, backgrounds. Balancing flash and ambient light, creatively, are at the core of this book.
If you're new to flash and you're feeling a little stunned as I was, this book is great for it's theory, practical examples and everything in between.
I'm giving it 4 stars because it is a tad short for its cost and perhaps could have been made up with a few more lighting real-world scenarios/examples.
