The Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro lens delivers superb, distortion-free images throughout its broad focus range, from infinity telephoto to lifesize (1:1) macro, as close as 12.2" (31 cm) without accessories. Its non-rotating front lens group makes it easier to work with polarizing filters. A focus limiter helps divide the broad focus range into more manageable chunks.
The "focus-free" mechanical design allows the lens to autofocus without any interference from the manual focus ring, making it easy to hold the lens without affecting the speed or normal operation of the autofocus function. Rugged mechanical construction also makes it durable enough for even the heaviest use required by professional photographers. An ideal lens for a wide variety of applications from nature photography to portraiture.
The improved DG lens design for this lens corrects for various aberrations. This macro lens is specially coated to get the best color balance while cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras.

My photographic roots lie in nature photography. I looked at many macro lenses, through weeks of talking to people and reading every review I could find i decided to buy this.
This lens is heavy and durable (a definate must when walking through thick woods) and will unlock natures mysteries. You will get an incredible amount of detail in great quality. If you are a nature enthusiast this lens is a must have!
It does have it's down falls. The autofocus on this is terrible, its very slow (dumb) and loud. I just use manual focus and it works great. The only time i recamend that you use the autofocus is if you are shooting somthing that wont run away like leafs or somthing of that sort.
Over all im very happy with my purchase!

I do not recommend this lens unless you are prepared to buy another after using it for 17 months or so. The motor will not hold up, and that came from Sigma in New York. I called to ask them if this was a common problem with this lens...after this short time period...and she said yes. So, the lens that I liked very much, is no longer. And I had to buy another, today after just about 15-17 months of use. Other than that, it did serve well. But from what I hear, the Nikon VR 105 is much better, but you will pay through the nose. Even so, I am now buying extra insurace.

Comments about Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro Lens for Nikon AF Cameras:
I shoot Nikon( D80 and D700)cameras. Besides these Sigma 105mm, i use for three(3) years Sigma 10-20mmDX and absolutely marvellous Sigma 50-500mm( no OS and no OS needed). I read quite alot negative reviews about Sigma 10-20mm, was ready for problems and what ?- both Sigma lenses 10-20 and 50-500mm tack sharp! Yes, both tack sharp. My best shots: on 500mm FL-Tack sharp.Thats the Sigma.Very happy with my copies. I owe also Nikkor 14-24mm 2.8/ Nikkor 80-200mm 2.8/ Nikkor 50mm 1.4G not to mention kit Nikkor 17-135mm G DX. Sigma goes on par- no problems so far(3 years). Do not believe anyone ! Try it Yourself. And ur paying normal, not Nikkor price!

Comments about Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro Lens for Nikon AF Cameras:
This lens in my opinion is far superior to the Tamron 90mm in build quality. It has the same MF/AF clutch as the Tamron as well. I was told by a salesman that it did not have it at a local camera shop that was trying to sell me the Tamron.
Bokeh is excellent, and the AF speed is perfectly fine, even for portraits, but in macro you'll want manual focus anyway.
Well spent money, and I couldn't be happier.

Comments about Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro Lens for Nikon AF Cameras:
I love the lens, no problems with it individually. Being extremely interested in macro shots and any photo with varied depth of field, this lens is great on both up-close details and getting subjects separated from backgrounds. The only thing is I wish is that the Autofocus worked with my D60. Until I can afford a camera that supports it, it does take me twice as long to take shots due to focusing. Especially since the Macro has a nice shallow depth of field, I have to double and triple check my focus points. The other thing that I just had to get used to is the set 105mm distance. I'm standing much, much farther back from what I want to shoot now. But both that and the manual focus together are making me think, and perhaps making me better in the long run.

Awesome lens for the money. Don't necessarily like the way the lens extends, but not bad once you get used to it.

Comments about Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro Lens for Nikon AF Cameras:
I have the sigma 70-200 macro which has the front element delaminating after 2 years, the sigma 120-400 which is sharp as wet cotton candy, and the lovely sigma 105mm 2.8 ex dg which after 2 years only reports f/1-f/11 to my d700 and d3s at max magnification. Buy only nikon glass, you will be better off trust me. The nikon 24-70 2.8 is amazing, think "variable prime" not zoom. The nikon 60mm 2.8 and the 105mm 2.8 macros with the nano crystals are truely epic. Also, if you manual focus often Zeiss has some glass worth looking at, the ratios on the focus rings are slower which is nice. The sigma lenses are such poor performers and of such low reliability that I have destroyed them as I could not in good peace of mind let a fellow human give me thier hard earned money in exchange for these atrocious products. If you are on a budget then learn to work with less glass but better glass. Bottom line if you are considering sigma then save yourself some trouble and just get a coolpix. If just one person heeds this post then I have done my civic duty. Also, I gave one star since the lens did take great photos while it worked but for me reliability is very important.
To those who have read this I thank you for your time.

I use this lens for macro and portraits.
I think I read someone say it won't do f2.8 but I use it wide open fairly often.
The lens is light and tack sharp, but I do not care much for the pull to manual focus ring as you end up sliding it back and forth when putting it or taking it out of your case.
I find it focuses a little closer to subject than 12 inches but with no internal focus this lens can double in size. It would be a much better lens with internal focus but I am sure this is why it is more affordable.

I use the Sigma 105mm on my Nikon d300 this is my first macro lens and I am not a pro, so I did not know what to expect, yes it is a bit slow on the auto focus, but when used in macro I use manual. I am getting real crisp sharp pictures some better than my nikon 70-200 and the price is right. Great bokeh
I was not aware that the 2.8 is not consistent throughout in all settings.

Just purchased and use only once. It touts 2.8 but when using macro widest aperture was 4.0. Lens hood does not attach to body with cap on. potential to lose easily. Other than that satisfied with output.
