The Canon EW-73B Lens Hood is designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
The "petal" shape of this lens hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area. This dedicated lens hood is designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

I use this product with my Canon 18-135 IS lens.
It's nice to have a layer of protection to catch dust that might otherwise get in the lens (it's got a felt interior coating) and if I were to drop the lens (I'd rather bust a lens hood than a lens). It's also nice to have protection against lens flare in direct sunlight. I used it in the Carribean and only had one or 2 pictures with any sort of flare in direct sunlight.
It's a bit bigger than I expected from pictures, but it's certainly the proper size for the lens.
I haven't had the product long enough to speak about durability but it seems like it will be.

This lens hood works just like all the other similar hoods from Canon: Attach it to lens, turn 1/4 of a revolution and there it is.
It protects the lens front from stray sunrays, rain, snow, dust and some violence.
You can also store it backwards on the lens, in which case it doesn't add anything to the length of the lens, but still to the diameter, of course.
The drawback with this one is that it's rather small. Compared to the significantly larger EW-83J for the EF-S 17-55 mm f/2.8 IS USM, which has the same widest angle, it seems this could have been a bit longer, even if it has a smaller diameter.
No, it's not included with the lens, so you have to buy it separately.

Comments about Canon EW-73B Lens Hood:
Tried de alternative ones, using them made me excerpt additional forces in process, and the fit on this is simply the best, plus the felted covering on the inside assures you there's no light bouncing in.
These should be included with the lens, seen as their not, I recommend as a must.

Solid enough to let me put the camera lens down in the bag. Seems durable enough, even though it is plastic.

I like that I can snap on the hood in reverse direction onto the lens when not in use. Don't need to carry yet another gadget around with me, and prevents me from losing it.

The Canon lens hood has a snug fit to my lens compared to one i purchased from China which keep coming off the lens.
It pays to spend a bit more money for a good quality product.

I would recommend this lens hood as it fits very nicely. A generic one probably won't fit as well. It is very well made.

Comments about Canon EW-73B Lens Hood:
you wont notice a huge difference but it looks good and is easy to use and store. the tulip cup doesnt interfere with the lens cap and is shallow enough to give you easy enough access to any rotating filter. If anything just get it because it looks good on the end of your lens.

I tried 3rd party lens hoods on my 18mm-135mm Canon lens, but none of them fit right. I decided to go with one that was designed specificlly for this lens and what a difference! Great lens hood.

With this lens hood, I have had no glare-ey or washed-out photos, as promised. No nasty vignetting either. The only down-side is the price.

Comments about Canon EW-73B Lens Hood:
I decided to purchase the bona-fide Canon lens hood after reading reviews of the other, lower priced models. The hood fits my 18-135mm lens perfectly, and can easily be "turned around" on the lens for transportation & storage. It locks on with a audible "snap" and stays in place. Can't ask for more than that!

Comments about Canon EW-73B Lens Hood:
I recently bought this hood for an 18-135mm lens. The hood produced a shadow (looks like a normal curve!) in the lower third center of the frame when I used the built-in flash on my canon rebel t1i (lens was at 22mm). No shadow when used with the 430EX flash. Outdoors the hood did fine at both wide and telescopic shots with no vignetting. I have found this hood is easier to work with filters than the Canon ET-60 hood due to the smaller length of the "east/west" tabs (The ET-60 is basically a 2 1/8" snout all the way around whereas this hood is 1 1/2" "north/south" and 1/2" "east/west"). This hood also has a micro-fuzz lining that reduces glare (the ET-60 is smooth on the inside). Other than the built-in flash shadow, I'm happy with it.
