The Canon BGM-E2 Battery Holder works with 6 AA batteries, and is included with the Canon BG-E2, BG-E3, and BG-E4 Vertical Grip/Battery Holders.
While alkaline, lithium, and NiMh batteries can be used, it should be noted that in cold temperatures it is best to use lithium batteries.

- Requires 6 "AA" batteries (alkaline, lithium, or NiMh)

I bought this to use with my 50D's BG-E2N battery grip. I needed it to keep as a spare to the one that came with the battery grip so if I needed a quick change of battery it was ready. The build on these are not as good as the ones that came with the battery grip. Instead of using coper conductors they use a different material. whenever I use this the power gauge on the camera registers as low battery (tested with stock BGM-E2 where battery registers as full.
