The Grass Valley ADVC110 is a high-quality, bi-directional analog/digital video converter. Conversion is accomplished by transferring media data from an IEEE-1394 FireWire port and outputting through composite and Y/C video and unbalanced stereo audio connections, and vice versa.
Note: For use with 4-Pin FireWire port an optional power supply is needed.
Note! A video capture card or OHCI FireWire (IEEE 1394) connection is required to capture DV.
- Connects analog video equipment to FireWire (IEEE 1394)-equipped computers for video editing.
- Compatible with Windows (including Windows 7) and Mac operating system-based DV editing systems.
- Compatible with leading editing and DVD authoring applications including Grass Valley EDIUS, Sony Vegas, Apple Final Cut Pro and iMovie, Avid Xpress DV and Liquid, Adobe Premiere Pro, Ulead MediaStudio Pro, and Windows Movie Maker.

Been wanting to move my library of VHS tapes over to DVD for a long time. The problem was, I couldn't find the proper means of doing the task. I read many reviews for software products as well as hardware gadgets from the likes of Pinnacle and Elgato but none of these were rated well for being able to preserve the original quality of the VHS when transferring to media meant to be shown on a large screen TV.It was by accident that I came across a recommendation for the ADVC-110. Though it was a rather expensive purchase, I felt that the reviews for it were strong enough to take a chance on buying it.I kid you not when I say that the day the ADVC-110 arrived I had it up and running within minutes after taking it out of the box without even reading the instructions.I simply connected the ADVC-110 to my VHS player using S-VIDEO (for Video) and RCA outputs for the sound to the identical inputs on the rear of the unit. I then plugged the ADVC-110 via Firewire 400 into my Mac Pro.Amazingly, iMovie instantly recognized the input. All I had to do was press record on iMovie and PLAY on my VHS player and the transfer began automatically.A few notes....* On iMovie '09 I was not able to hear audio on my computer during the transfer process. I was only able to see that it was transferring the video. Rest assured the audio is being recorded as well. I switched to the older iMovie '07 (which I recommend and can be still found as a free download on the net) and I was able to hear the audio during its transfer.* Be sure to select the lit switch on the front of the ADVC-110 to ANALOG for transfers using VHS or another analog source.Though the ADVC-110 is not capable of providing quality better than the original source, I was pleasantly pleased that there seemed to be no degradation in quality from the original VHS to the final product I viewed on my 65" display. [$] I don't think you can do much better without this product. You certainly can't by spending less on cable gadgets that are designed more for transferring to an iPod than DVD media.

I purchased this converter to transfer over VHS and 8mm recordings. At this time I am only able to test the VHS transfers to my iMac 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB of DDR2 memory. I am using the native software that comes with Macs ~ iMovie '08, GarageBand '08, and iDVD. My VCR is a Sanyo 4-head Hi-Fi VCR, nothing fancy. The tapes can be roughly up to 15 years old but still look good.
Now that I set the stage, the problem with this converter (or maybe it is something else in the loop) is the audio is not consistent. I'll have stereo then it will drop to one channel and then may switch back. I can't seem to correct it so I'm giving this product a low score due to the final product needs a good picture as well as good audio and this device does not give me that. It just creates problems I have to try to smooth out or just live with audio jumping in and out from two channels to one channel and back.... I hope it does better with the 8mm tapes. So disappointed...

So far I have limited experience with the device, but I have checked operability, and it has worked great so far.
I will be using the product to digitize original content from back up recording tapes and DVDs and also for internet streaming.
So far I don't see any drawbacks with the device, except perhaps that the power supply needs to be purchased seperately. This is not an issue if you are able to power the device by means of USB though.

I had this device previously and I loved to work with it. But its 4-contact fire-wire socket was broken. That's why I use this one with 6-contact fire-wire socket only. It works perfectly and it needs not a power supply. Also I use it for digital to analog conversion only. I have no needs to convert digital to analog.

While I have only used it on one or two simple projects, this seems to be a quick and easy way to capture video from VHS tape. Quick Time Pro needs firewire input to record movies and the AVDC provides that hook up.

I run a small production company and this converter is great for capturing older analog formats. The one thing I would mention is that the firewire ports are 400 and if you're working with a newer mac you'll need a 400 to 800 adapter cable.

Usually used firewire port from camera directly into our Apple MacBook for streaming capability... my firewire port on my camera died and no one makes them anymore - but this device solved the problem! It uses the firewire port on your laptop, but allows you to input from different types of sources (now we're using the standard VIDEO from the camera!). We get the added benefit of there being a video OUTput on the back of the box for our clients to watch the video... our previous set-up required us to use the monitor output from the laptop and there was always an annoying "lag" between sound and picture... so this product solved TWO problems for less than the price of a new camera! LOVE IT!

The ADVC110 is the finest converter I have used. Other models would lose picture while transferring archival footage into my laptop. This model doesn't skip a beat. Has a constant stable picture and the digital transfers are great. The diversity of having S-video and composite video inputs & outputs for digitizing, is an asset. This component also has the luxury of the multiple FireWire ins & outs as well. Comes with the necessary cables for dubbing and software if needed. Also the separately sold power adapter is available, but the best thing is that this unit works on phantom power and the digitizing doesn't lose any quality. My Mac recognized the unit immediately and I was digitizing within seconds! Well worth the money invested !

Absolutely wonderful product! I can't say enough about it. Very simple to set up. I use it to stream live video over the Internet and no problems whatsoever. I needed this since my cam does not have firewire out, it only has component and HDMI. This takes care of my problem 100%. Only 2 wires necessary: Component out from my cam, and firewire to my laptop. Nothing to configure, nothing to install. True plug-n-play!
