I love Nikon and I am fan of Nikon products. I own D700 and D300 camera bodies. On the D700 I have the great Nikkor 24-70mm and cost me an arm and a leg. On my D300 I tried many lenses: nikkor 24-120mm VR, nikkor 16-85mm VR, nikkor 18-200mm VR and I really was dissapointed of the quality of my end product hmm just ok pictures. A little affraid to go off-brand I started reading about this Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG and decided to give it a try.... this lens has a word...AMAZING, WORDERFUL, INCREDIBLE SHARP, RESPONSIVE ALL THE WAY, AMAZING CONTRAST, SOLID CONSTRUCTION... and I can keep going for a while. Now Sigma lenses have my 100% trust and I am looking into other Sigma lenses like 50-500mm; 12-24mm or 10-20mm and I certainly will be more than happy with it. Don't even dare to compare lower end nikkor lenses with Sigma lenses. This Sigma people are doing their best and using the finest glass to gain the pro confidence and of course they got me. Nikkor lenses are great but I will say only on high end lenses ($1500 and up)and not the cheap ones that really are, feel and give cheap end results.
Thanks again SIGMA... you rock

I've been using this on a D80 for about a month. Its built like a tank, which means its very (front) heavy. It is very soft at f/2.8 but starts getting sharp by f/4 and by f/8 is extremely sharp. The focusing is very very loud and misfocuses a lot. It has a very good look to it at 24mm and has very good macro at 70mm. The zoom ring doesn't glide easily from from 28mm to 35mm. Like I said I've used it for a month and its already up on craigslist. If you want a good wide angle zoom get the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. Its cheaper, sharper, focuses faster, lighter weight and uses 67mm filters. If you want a "portrait lens" get the Nikon 50mm f/1.8

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro DF Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:
This is a great f/2.8 lens.
I've tried it in low light situations. Both for portraits and photography of art projects.
Since I bought it is almost permanently on my camera.
It feels solid and have a nice balance on my d200.
It will suite the need of most of us. Even pros.
No we can't fairly compare it with the Nikon high end lenses. But it is nearly 1/3 of the price.
But it is close enough; if you are on a tight budget you will enjoy this lens a lot. It like comparing a Toyota against a Porche.
The Toyota might not be as luxurious but it will do the job efficiently and it will do it for a long time!
the resolution is very decent, a bit soft on the sides.
It hunts a bit in poor light condition.
I'm just not sure about the clutch function used to switch the M/A modes.

I got this for my d5000 just to find out that the AF doesnt work with the d5000. it was listed that the AF doesn't work for the d40 and d60 only. Other than that, the lens has been so far so good. The zoom has some getting used to, but i'm enjoying the lens.

This lens hasn't been off my D300s since I got it. The IQ is as good as the Nikon version for a lot less $$$. My only complaint is due to the exterior coating on the lens, the hood is hard to put on and take off.

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro DF Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:
It's really heavy (although I expected that from the other reviews I read). I had to return the first one I ordered because the auto focus wouldn't work at all. I just got my second one a few days ago and it seems I am having the same problem. It works a bit better than the one I had to return but if I am shelling out over 500 dollars I should get something that works all the time. Not impressed at all.

I love my new lens, I use this lens for a lot of portrait work! I love the focal length while having a stop of 2.8.
It is a little big, it makes my d300 look sort of small! Otherwise a very nice lens and very sharp images!

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro DF Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:
I wanted the much more expensive Nikon version of this lens, but I opted to go this route and I am sorry I did. The lens is just about useless. I have not gotten one sharp good looking shot out of it. All the pix I have taken with this are soft. Often, the lens cannot find the autofocus handle.
Stay away...

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro DF Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:
This lens is a great buy for the money. It's super sharp and focuses very quickly. The only reason I didn't give it four stars is because of the design. The weight and size are fine for me, but I don't like how the zoom ring is so close to the camera body. Also, it may just be my specific lens, but the zoom ring is also very tough to turn. I'm sure it will just work itself out though.

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro DF Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:
I shoot mostly portraiture with the lens and it is a decent lens. I love how solid the lens feels and I would rate it above average for image quality. The biggest problem I've found with the lens is image softness. Another issue is the autofocus tends to hunt alot in moderate to low levels of artificial light. I shoot alot of low-light portraiture/glamor and this tends to be a problem frequently. Overall I really like the lens though and would recommend it as a more cost effective substitute for the Nikon lens for those without gobs of money to spend.

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro DF Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:
I bought this lens for the only reason I didn't have the money for the Nikon version of it.
I had to send it back to Sigma so they could fix it, because it had a soft focus on ALL appertures. After they've sent it back, it was fine from 3.5 up.. 2.8 still very soft, so what's the point on having a 2.8 lens if you can't use it fully open? Even though I sharpen my pics on editing, it still looks too soft for my taste.
I should have saved my money and bought the real one!

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro DF Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:
This lens is very sharp, but on the heavy side. Also the focusing motor is quite loud.
Also, never seen this before, but the barrel actual zooms backwards. Like at 24mm, the barrel is extended, but at 70mm it's fully contracted.
Zoom ring is far too close to the body of the camera.

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro DF Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:
I use this lens for everyday photos and snapshots. While it is a heavy lens, I appreciate the zoom capabilities as my other lens is a prime. I have found that my copy is not especially sharp at f2.8, but I get my best shots at f3.5 on the larger end of the aperture. I think this is common with many lenses though. No complaints or regrets on this purchase.

I have had the lens 2 weeks on my d80 and like it alot so far. Fast focus. Don't see the soft focus per some other reviews. Intend to take to Europe as everyday lens along with my 18-200 VR. Purchase mainly for the f2.8. May be a little heavy but still feels good on the d80.

I shoot extensively, i shoot at night, flash photography a lot, i shoot outdoor. so i need a lens that can cover all this.
The sigma 24-70 works gr8 with me, i had the chance to use the nikkor 17-55 too and comparing them both, i didn't see that much difference in performance concerning the speed of AF, quality of picture and sharpness
Can't neglect the softness at 2.8 but it is easly recovered in editing.

This lens is capable of great photographs. It is heavy to carry, but mine is extremely sharp and contrasty. The 82mm front leads to very expensive filters. Expect to sell your children if you want a polarizer. It is reasonably priced, but it has some warts. It is a keeper for me. At least for now.
