This is the standard kit lens for Canon film Rebels. I've used it a bit on my K2 (which I use as a backup camera when I absolutely must have automatic focus and metering) and I can't really say anything bad about it. The autofocus seems pretty fast and the zooming isn't too stiff. I wouldn't really recommend it if you have ANY other lenses as this is pretty much the bottom of the barrel for Canon zoom lenses. Not that it's a bad lens at all- I'm perfectly content with it, but it's just not that exciting. Maybe I've been spoiled by fast FD mount lenses from the 1970's and 80's that I use on my primary cameras, but F/4 at 28mnm doesn't do it for me, neither does the plastic casing.
On the other hand, if you've a digital and are looking for something a little longer than the stock 14-45, or have an EF mount film camera and no lens this would do well enough. Really, though, if you shoot specific things get a specific lens (ie, the very inexpensive Canon F/1.8 50mm prime for portraits, or the similar F/2.8 28mm for landscapes). All in all, it is what it is- a reasonable general-purpose starter lens.

This lens came in a kit I bought, and I was reasonably satisfied with it at first. However, as soon as I purchased a second lens, I realized what poor quality this one is. It is cheaply constructed, very slow, and produces poor results. Softness and distortion plague this lens. Additionally, the autofocus is slow, and the construction inconveniently places the manual focus ring at the far end of the barrel. I would not recommend this lens to anybody.

So far, I'm really liking this lens. I have an old Canon A1 and the 28 - 80 lens was alway my favoite all purpose lens because it can do a variety of shots. This one is just as functional.

I'm a photography student, and this lens was my first one... After 3 years it got broken (I don't blame it)... I just got the same lens yesterday, I had the chance to buy another one, but I do really really like it, believe me, I wouldn't buy it again if it wasn't good enough,
Comments about Canon EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 III AF Lens - Black:
I use this lens with a Rebel Xti. Works well with my 580 EXII flash unit.
This lens works great. Very fast accurate focus. Quite as well. Stays put at a given focal length even with "gear" attached to the thread mount. About the only thing I don't like is that if you have to manual focus for some special situation, the focus ring is rather narrow to grab.
Very similar to the lens that comes in the "kit", but that one is EF-S and this is EF. Note that if they ever make a Canon with a full size 35mm image sensor, those EF-S lenses will phase out. They sit closer to the mirror. The Xti can mount either EF or EF-S.
Comments about Canon EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 III AF Lens - Black:
For those of you that have the EF lens adaptor for the canon XL-1--or any other canon XL-? video camera--and have limited funds for the films you shoot, this lens is definitely one to keep in mind. As you know, great cinematography is best displayed with your depth of field and array of colors used on set when you paint your canvas with light. You can't play with your F-stop with this one, but depth field looks amazing and, let's face it, it's cheap. If you don't have the big bucks and you want to look pro; change your lights, use this lens; and if you do it right, it looks outstanding.

Great addition for my camera bag. I already had the standard 18-55 that came with the camera so I wanted something that would zoom a little more without breaking my wallet.

Comments about Canon EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 III AF Lens - Black:
For the price this is a 5 star lens. You couldn't expect anything better and the zoom range is nearly perfect for a walk around lens. I've used it on an XTI and 20D can only say if you are on a budget, don't hesitate. After some rough treatment, I can add that the plastic has suffered no noticable damage. It seems to bounce when my metal lenses crunch and dent.

For the price you can't do better especially on a Digital Rebel XTI like mine. And for double the price, you will get a metal mount and better build but not much more. For triple the price, I doubt you will see a difference except in weight. Very reliable, fast focusing, sharp and feather light.

I purchased this lens late in 2002 when I first got my Canon EOS Rebel Ti. But I have the version in silver. I have owned this lens for more than 5 years now believe me, I have gotten my money's worth out of it. Today, I am using it with my Canon EOS Rebel Xti that I purchased on Tuesday, August 14, 2007.

Comments about Canon EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 III AF Lens - Black:
I got this lens with my Rebel T2. It was great to startusing my camera and get a hang of all the features. Thedecent amount of range (28-90) does give a lot of room toexperiment. The lens however is only so-so. The clarity is average andI have experienced some barrel distortion. Also, it is tooslow to work in many situations without a tripod or fast film. If you are getting this in a kit, or just want aninexpensive all around lens to play with this is for you. Otherwise just try the tremendous for the cost 50mm f/1.8lens as a nice prime in the middle of this range and add awide angle and/or tele later.
Expertise: Intermediate
Problems Encountered: As another reviewer mentioned filters such as circularpolarizers cannot be used as the front lens element rotatesto focus.
Comments about Canon EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 III AF Lens - Black:
I bought this lens with the EOS Elan 7NE. It's a nice lens, does what it should, but it cannot be used with a polarizer, as the front element rotates during focus. It IS good for amateur scenery, unfortunately the slow aperture prevents it from being too good a portrait lens.
Expertise: Advanced Amateur
Problems Encountered: Rotating front focusing element makes the lens unusable with a polarizer.
Comments about Canon EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 III AF Lens - Black:
Be aware when buying this lens that there is no zoom-in.It's all zoom-out. It offers a pretty good wide angle imagefor short range shots. I don't have any issues with imagequality, but this is the only lens I have used with theCanon Rebel XT. The lens is sturdy and doesn't appear to bemade cheaply. No problems that I have come across, but I'm not an expertand can't offer an expert opinion or comparison of other lens.
Expertise: Intermediate
Problems Encountered: None in the last month.
