The Pentax smc P-D FA Macro 50mm f/2.8 is designed to be extremely compact and lightweight, compared to conventional macro lenses. The drastic downsizing and weight reduction were achieved through the development of compact, high-performance optical elements and the incorporation of durable yet lightweight exterior components.
This lightweight macro lens features an image circle to accommodate up to 35mm format and offers close-up to 1:1 life-size magnification.
The smc P "D" lens series is designed to optimize image quality in both digital SLR and film photography. Improvements include optimized lens coating along with curvature and positioning of optical elements. In particular, flare and ghost images - the most disturbing factors in digital SLR photography - have been reduced to minimum for clear, high-quality digital images.

Bought this lens after trying an extension tube for macro photography. Very happy with new lens, glad I made the investment. Great customer service, quick shipping and arrived as estimated. Will look at B&H for all future photography needs.

Comments about Pentax Normal smc P-D FA 50mm f/2.8 Macro Autofocus Lens:
I mostly use this lens for close up photos of flowers and butterflies. The camera never mistakenly focuses on a nearby object if I manual focus onto the object as a rough focus, then autofocus for the final shot. Pictures of items that are very close, such as 10 inches, are stunning. Would be an excellent camera for capturing jewelry, coins, stamps etc.

Comments about Pentax Normal smc P-D FA 50mm f/2.8 Macro Autofocus Lens:
When this lens first arrived at my doorstep I opened the package and saw this very small lens I had just saved [$] from my minor paychecks to buy. Starting to regret the purchase I attached it to my Pentax Kx and started shooting anything I could find. First it was screws and nails, then eventually coins stacked on top of one another. The lens sharpness is incredible and color rendition is superb. I really love the quick shift focus system going from auto to manual with a slide of the focus ring. The only problem I could see some people getting irritated about is if you are not trying to put one very small spot of the picture in focus this may not be the lens for you. Unless your subject at a macro magnification is completely side towards the camera everything else is out of focus. But for me I love this and was my main reason in purchasing it. Being my first actual purchased lens for my hobby, I would do it again if I had to.

I've been a Pentax user forever, but bought other brand lenses. My first Pentax lens is a real winner. Everything is a plus - size speed, incredible clarity and super bokeh. Buy it, folks!! You won't be disappointed!!

Comments about Pentax Normal smc P-D FA 50mm f/2.8 Macro Autofocus Lens:
I am a hobby photo person, not really an enthusiast. Usually I use an 18-250 Tamron lens which covers most of my needs, especially when travelling. I'm now getting more interested in photography, so I bought this lens particularly for informal portraits of family and friends indoors and for macros when I'm out and about.
The points I like: very sharp lens, excellent image quality, great colours in the images. A great 50 mm all-rounder.
Dislikes: sometimes the AF hunts backwards and forwards before making up its mind with close-up macro shots. This can slow down the capture of an image at times, but I can certainly live with it. Otherwise the AF is very accurate and very fast.
Overall, I'm very happy with it and would buy it again in an instant, and would recommend it to anyone wanting a 50 mm fixed focal length.

Comments about Pentax Normal smc P-D FA 50mm f/2.8 Macro Autofocus Lens:
I got this lens to compliment the 100mm.
I find it a more versitile lens than the 100mm, I don't have to change lenses or walk to the other side of the greenhouse to frame a 4inch pot and can go straight on to shooting close to 1:1 again without missing a beat.
Its downfall is it lacks the working distance of the 100mm at high magnification.

Comments about Pentax Normal smc P-D FA 50mm f/2.8 Macro Autofocus Lens:
Great for closeups of wildlife, small objects, and other objects with a high level of detail (my cat's eye comes to mind). It is not the smallest lens I own (my Pentax f/1.4 50mm), so that's a minor detractor.
I chose this lens over Pentax's more recent SMCP-DA 35mm f/2.8 Macro Limited lens because this will fit both my film and digital SLRs. I really enjoyed the Limited, but the lack of backwards compatibility with older camera bodies killed the deal for me.
However, I'm very pleased I went with this lens - tight closeups, very sharp images, decently fast at f/2.8, and no complaints. This is my first macro, but I'm impressed by the 1:1 magnification and short minimum focus distance. I'm looking forward to using this lens more often!

I just tried it only one time. I can hardly say much about it. It seems to be o.k.

I'm getting very sharp images with high precision auto-focus system !!! With this 50mm lens you can be closer to the patient's mouth, and the ring flash yield gets much better.
