Audio-Technica Pro 70 Cardioid Lavalier Microphone
The Audio-Technica Pro 70 is a cardioid lavalier microphone designed for vocal or instrument capturing in recording or sound reinforcement applications. The frequency response favors the mid-range frequencies of instruments and vocals while minimizing noise registering at high and low frequencies.
The cardioid polar pattern is effective in minimizing pickup at the off-axis sections of the microphone capsule. The result is improved signal before feedback response and minimal ambiance pickup. A low frequency roll-off switch further reduces low frequency noise due to hum, wind etc. The provided UM3 power supply provides phantom power with a single 1.5V AA battery or external phantom power source. The UM3 provides a standard 3-pin XLR output connection to mixers, preamplifiers, cameras etc.

I purchased 3 of these to use for filming video depositions. They are thoughtfully designed and rugged.
The power supply runs off one AA battery (included)and is made of heavy metal. It has a switch on the side with three positions - power off - power on, flat response - and power on, low cut filter.
The mic clip is not flimsy. The storage bag is padded mesh fabric and is nicer than what you get with an SM-57. The capsule is a bit large, thicker than a pencil not as thick as one of those black permanent markers we all use to label our DVDs (you know the one... right?).
The best two features of this mic though are it's RF rejection (dead silent while a cellphone call was lighting my other -more expensive brand- lav up like a Christmas tree) and the length of the cable coming from the power supply to the mic element (something like 6 feet, maybe more. and it's good quiet cable, not a lot of handling noise).
The only thing I might call a con is that the Battery Cover Latch is sort of a light weight, not cheap, but not exactly the same build quality as the rest of the mic, but certainly not a deal-breaker... My suggestion is buy three.

This mic works well in a perfect situation. However, it picks up too much wind/breath noise and pop's and overmodulates with the slightest of wind or breathing on the mic. I would reccomend the Audio Technica AT 899 for this situation. It cost twice as much. But, when you have a crew and expensive talent the peace of mind and less "stopping for technical problems" is well worth the extra cost.

Reliable, rugged and with the 6' attached lav connector, we are able to hide the power supply (body pack) under the table and out of sight, so our recordings are "clean" looking.

I already owned one Pro 70 microphone and loved the quality of the audio. I shoot and edit video for a local TV show and I wanted to purchase a second Pro 70 microphone so I could use them for interviews. If you need high quality audio for a small price, then I highly recommend the Pro 70.

I needed at lav that I could use in a filed interview to capture sound without depending on my Sennheiser shotgun. I wanted the flexibility to use the phantom power that comes with the Pro 70 or supplied by another source. Overall, the mic met my needs. NOTE: it is not good for exterior recordings, if there is the smallest chance of wind. It is really for studio or controlled settings. If that fits you bill, its worth the money.

It does what I wanted it to do! Used with video camera, it picks up voices great with fine fidelity. I am well satisfied. As with any such mike, be careful about rubbing against clothing or breathing on it; but that's not a mike problem.
