The Sigma 150mm f/2.8 APO Macro EX DG HSM lens is a super compact and lightweight large aperture telephoto lens, with life-size macro capability.
To maintain high optical performance from infinity to close-up 1:1 macro photos without accessories, the Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM incorporates a "Floating Internal Focusing" (FIF) system. As a result, the lens also features a non-rotating front lens group which makes it easier to work with polarizing filters. The HSM feature provides ultra quiet high-speed autofocusing as well as full-time manual focus override.
The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This macro lens is specially coated to get the best color balance whilst cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras.
Note: This lens (similar to Nikon "G" type lenses) does not have an aperture ring on the lens, and is not fully compatible with the F4, N90-series, N70, N8008-series and N6006 (or older model) cameras. With these cameras, only programmed auto or shutter-priority auto exposure mode can be used.
Note: HSM lenses, while able to manually focus with all Nikon F-mount cameras, will not autofocus with certain older film AF cameras. This is the same limitation as with Nikon's own AF-S lenses. Incompatible models are: N60, N55, N8008/s, N6006, N5005, N4004 & N2020.

Comments about Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX APO Macro EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:
The only thing that I don't like much is the slow auto focus speed. Besides that, it really is a perfect macro lens. I bought this primarily to take wedding ring pictures. The pictures come out very sharp and even though the auto focus is slow, it's accurate. I give this a 5 star rating still because most macro photographers use manual focus, so the slow autofocus is not a big deal.

Comments about Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX APO Macro EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:
Very sharp and good alternate to Nikon.
Only 2 negative things I can say are,
1) Heavy, difficult to hold and focus while shooting macro, especially bugs.
2) Auto focus seems to hunt and slow. May be it changes with the camera. (My camera is D80)
But this is not much issue to me since I do manual focusing when I do macro photos.
Other than these two, what ever you need on a lens are there. I really love it.

Comments about Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX APO Macro EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:
Great macro optics, but this lens is very heavy and very, very slow to autofocus, making it not an ideal choice for a telephoto. I ended up returning mine because I thought the copy I had was slightly decentered, and went in another direction entirely. Great tripod foot. I also like the 3 stage autofocus setting which helps for macro.

The focus limiter is a big plus. Of course it is a great Macro, but I was surprised how well it works in other situations.

Comments about Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX APO Macro EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:
Very good build quality, solid feel. Convenient tripod collar. Speed of focus is a bit slow but acceptable. I really like the focus limiter switch which does help to speed things up. I've only shot with this lens for about a week but the images its producing are very sharp. So far I would give this lens a high recommendation.

I wanted this lens for months. I was impressed by the quality optics of this lens. What caught my attention was the quality of photos and the speed acquired in focus. I confess I was resistant to buy a Sigma lens in my bag because I have different NIKKOR lenses and thought I should follow this line. Certainly, I will buy a new lens SIGMA.

This lense is heavy, pondorusly slow to auto focus an has a fixed zoom. That said i love the lense. Its the sharpest piece of glass that i have. At times i wish i had went with a variable zoom marco lense but as long as you understand what you are buying you will not be disapointed i promise that. For the money i cant imagine getting a better macro

Comments about Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX APO Macro EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:
Bought this lens for the added distance from the subject it allows vs. the Nikon 105 macro. I was concerned that I wouldn't be happy with the performance and build quality from a 3rd party lens manufacturer as all my glass purchases have been Nikon, but I was pleasantly surprised by both the performance and build quality.

I use this on a D700 for orchid photography and portraiture. In my greenhouse with breezes blowing the flowers you can still get superior results hand-held with f/25 and a flash to stop the motion (and give true colors). Great portrait lens as long as you have the room, but you can be half as far away as with a 300.

Comments about Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX APO Macro EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:
I use this primarily for what it is designed for: close-up and macro work. The lens is an absolutely superb macro lens, razor-sharp, excellent contrast, no CA, a nice, very functional tripod collar that is easily adjusted or removed. Build quality is excellent too. The lens has a very sturdy feel to it, really feels like a piece of professional equipment.
To do proper macro work, you are going to be shutting the auto-focus off, so the auto-focus capability of this lens, which is comparable to all the other macro lenses out there including the Nikons, is not an issue, it auto-focuses just fine, for a macro. And if you are serious about macro work, you are going to be putting this lens on a tripod, so the lack of VR is not an issue either. If you hand-hold a lens like this, even with VR, you are not going to consistently get all the sharpness from it that it is capable of delivering.
It is a heavy lens, but that's the price paid for getting this level of quality, so, for me, that isn't an issue either. All-in-all, it is an amazingly good lens, definitely professional-quality in all respects.

Comments about Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX APO Macro EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:
I got this lens for my Nikon D90 and D50 DSLRs. I love the way it is built, very strong, very nice finish and not too heavy at the same time. It takes great pictures, very sharp if you place it on a tripod or if your subject is still (not moving) or you can use higher shutter speed if you decide to hand held your camera to prevent or bring blur to its minimum. The only thing that I was not so happy about it and I think that is same for all kinds and brands of macro lenses is the focus problem, and that happens when your subject is moving alot. One last wish that I have is, if Sigma could turn this great lens to VR (Vibration Reduction) that will make it even greater and one of the very top macro lenses.
Over all if you like macro photography this is your lens, which is more afordable than other brands.

Comments about Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX APO Macro EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:
Bottom Line - Very Good Lens.I was in the market for a longer Macro Lens - I already have the 105mm Nikon 2.8 but wanted one with a little longer reach. I was considering the Nikon 200mm F4 but I ran across this Sigma 150MM. After a day or so doing some reading I decided to try it. [...] This past weekend I had an opportunity to shoot many subjects. In the Macro area; The lens is easy to work with and use, It snaps into focus and has great contrast with very sharp images. I believe this lens gives me a few more inches from the subject for 1:1 Macro work. Comparing it to my very sharp 105mm Nikon Micro lens the Sigma is just as good optically, I am very pleased with the Sigma's Macro Capabilities. For general photography; Again the lens is very sharp and super quite when using the auto focus, I mean super quite. It is a bit slow to focus but no major worries - You have a 3 range limiter to assist in focus range. This lens makes an exceptional all around lens, and I think anyone considering a Macro or long Portrait lens should give the Sigma some thought. In fact, I am considering other Sigma Lens for future purchased. The lens also has a detachable tripod collar, The collar is a good design and easy on, easy off, and adjusting. What I don't Like; I don't care for the coating on the lens barrel, it is hard to describe the texture, sort of like very fine black velvet. I can already tell this will not wear well, and will look worn in no time. I would have preferred the traditional painted barrel but given the fact the lens is such a good performer I overlook this.Overall 4 stars, I took one star due to the weird coating on the metal parts.

I read a lot before buying this lens. When I first got it I almost sent it back....thankfully I didnt.
The autofocus is SLOW. especially in anything other than full sunlight. Plan on getting a magnifying eyepiece and using manual focus.
The fstop [at least on my D700] will change as you focus. this is normal [it scared me at first and I thought I had a defective lens]
results with this lens are phenomenal once you get used to it. Dont plan on going out and having your first macro shot look awesome...
I recently printed a stargazing lily image capture with this lens at 16x20 and it has blown away everyone thats seen it.

Comments about Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX APO Macro EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:
With my outstanding and venerable 20-year-old Nikon 200mm macro on its last legs, I wanted to find a worthy replacement. Being a "Nikon Snob" I hesitated to buy a non-Nikon lens but with the 200mm essentially unavailable now, I needed a replacement and the Sigma 150mm was getting very good reviews.
My two main concerns were quality (both image and lens construction), and the loss of 50mm of optics (actually, it's more like 30mm as tests show the Nikon 200mm macro is closer to 180mm).
After a couple weeks of serious macro nature photography, I can easily say the quality of the Sigma matches the Nikon in every way. Outstanding image quality and the lens is built like a tank. (One minor complaint is the placement of the tripod collar knob makes it difficult to get to the lens release button on my D700). I've also found the Sigma 150mm still gives plenty of working distance and is able to render a nice, poster-like background under the right conditions.
I should also say I cannot comment on any slow-focusing issues because I prefer manual focus when doing macro nature work.

This is an impressive lens with no obvious cons. The build quality is excellent and image quality and resolution at a variety of distances and macro are at least as good (to my eyes) as Nikon glass. The bokeh is also good especially for a zoom lens.

This is a great macro lens, the bokeh is nice and creamy and the long focal length gives great working distance
The autofocus is slow but shouldn't be used for actual macro work, will not replace a normal tele prime (180mm 2.8)

I use it for Stock Photography on my Nikon D700 for extreme food and nature close-ups.
Bokeh is excellent and sharp all the way through all apertures.
Can be a little slow to focus in low light but other than that no complaints.

After trying the Nikon 105mm VR, I found that it was sharp, but suffered from a small amount of CA, and didn't perform up to my Tamron 90mm.
I sent the Nikon back to BH, and ordered the Sigma 150mm. This is a great lenses. Only 2 oz heavier then the 105 VR with the tripod ring removed, and no CA problem.
Sharp and very rugged construction.
After some more testing, this may well replace my Nikkor 200mm AF-D. It's that good, and a lot lighter.

Comments about Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX APO Macro EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:
I brought the lens for macro and portrait photography. I am over whelmed with the out put and its performance. Excellent DOF, great contrast and gives very sharp images. It is bit heavy lens but I use tripod and it does not matter much for my purpose. Though it searches lot for focusing in auto mode. Over all I am satisfied with the performance. Great lens for the best price.
